Speed limits - where do you pour the coals on with a planing boat?

Hello all,

Upon leaving a port, and assuming there are no other boats around (wash), at what point do you throttle up and get on the plane? My pilot book says there is a speed limit 'on the approaches to' my local marina. Where does that start? At the safe water mark?

Specifically the area I am referring to is coming out of the Walton backwaters.

Sorry if this is a really basic question. We just sold our Centaur and have moved to a motorboat so we are missing some of the 'local knowledge'.

Cheers, -Jason

Normally a few boats in immediate vicinity of harbour/dock/marina sorting themselves out, usually wait until well clear before creating any serious waves .
Will also ease up anywhere on trip if small craft/canoes/fishing dinghies are likely to be affected as well.
Was taught that throttles are just as easily closed as opened. :)

Leaving aside courtsey, wakes etc. and missing out a couple of areas

12 knots over the ground
(ii) The Deep Water Channel between -
(a) a line drawn between the charted
positions of the Platters and Pitching
Ground Buoys; and
(b) a line drawn between the charted
positions of the Cliff Foot and North West
Beach Buoys.

8 knots over the ground
(iii) From a line extended through the charted
positions of the Cliff Foot and North West
Beach Buoys and including the limits of the
Harbour, except the area designated in
paragraph (iv).

5 knots over the ground
(iv) Any channel abeam of the yacht mooring
pontoons and fishing berths at Halfpenny
pier.

Which is daftly complicated and because of that no doubt allows them to trap anyone they choose.

I assume a pilot book or local knowledge and also speed over ground so making a GPS mandatory.

Spain is simple

3kts in the marina, 5 kts until 300m out.

Walton Backwaters has a speed limit of eight knots which starts about 50 yards seaward side of Island Point NCB. Once you enter The Twizzle it is six knots.

I tend to start to plane as soon as I am through the eight knot markers seaward, however, due to the narrow deep water channel, I slow to a low wash displacement speed when passing yachts etc until past Crab Knoll SHB until I can give them a wide enough berth.
