We are coming to the end of another lovely holiday on the beautiful Greek Island of Skiathos I keep getting the terrible urge to bring one of my older 17 foot fletcher speedboats (I am slightly mad and have 6 in total back home) over here and leave it here somewhere. My idea is to tow it from the Uk by road as a bit of an adventure.

I have met powerboat 2 and ICC but I was hoping if some of the Greek boaters or even Brits with a boat in Greece could give me the heads up on what paperwork and other red tape I would have to complete if I did this.

Regards

Dennis

I have a Chaparral 180 which is used off Corfu. When I towed it over I had the following:
SSR Cert
VAT Invoices as it was a Canadian Import
Insurance Docs
The boat is CE marked

Once in Corfu I did Powerboat 2 which you need for anything over 30hp

When on the water I carry:
Copy of Powerboat 2 license
Copy of passport
Copy of SSR
Copy of insurance cart
2 oars. It's a reg but you couldn't move the boat with it.
You're supposed to have flares.
Lifejackets for all on board
Copy of VHF license

I think that's about it but I'm sure others will fill in any gaps.

I'm off out on mine in a minute so better check all the paperwork and then out to enjoy 32c today.

@Denis O: have you been stopped and checked by the men in grey at all? Where they happy with the docs you produced? If so fine, have heard various stories in the past.

@Dennis: I can check for you sometime after the season ends and ppl are all back (obviously you're not in a hurry right now)

Gut feeling is that it would be OKish to bring your own boat and use it here (get the right # of flares and size of fire extinguishers to keep them happy) but for sure selling it on to a native is a no-no unless you produce umpteen docs you never imagined they ever existed (that's Greek bureaucracy for you)
looks like we'll be in Skiathos on the 2-3rd July but I guess you'll be gone by then.

cheers

Yes we will be gone by then. We have had another lovely holiday we love Greece and of course the Greek people. We come for two weeks most years

We have been to Skiathos 6 times and each time hired a rib or speed boat for a day. On 3 occasions including last week we were stopped by the port police in their big rib.

They wanted to see my licence which I had, the emergency box including the flares or as they called them things that make fire. They seemed interested in the date on the flares and also our hire agreement. All seemed ok so they waived us on

This is why I would like to know what is actually required

The boat I would bring is an oldish fletcher 16 footer with a 75 hp on the back it is only worth about £2000 so no real worries I would just like to have one here to use when I want

Any idea how much a boat yard might charge to store it in skiathos

Also while travelling around I see so many old speed boats all over the place but there never seem to be any for sale

Regards

Dennis

Up to date, I've never been stopped so I don't know if I have enough papers to satisfy the port police. My list comes from discussion with other boaters here and so should be quite comprehensive.

I haven't carried flares in the past, although I do have VHF with DSC, and it's attached to my navigation. I'm never more than a mile off shore so even a mobile would work fine.

With lack of money in Greece I suspect the port police may not even be able to fill their fuel tanks so not so many around, certainly in this area. More likely to be having a fag & frappe in a bar somewhere.

I kno9w what you mean and I thought that but as I said I have been stopped 3 times in Skiathos and they seem to be out most days in their big Rib

The drive is a great adventure - many years ago I drove to cyprus, basically caught the ferry from hull to zeebrugge - then drove to ancona in italy then ferry to patras - and from patras drove to where my ship was docked in pireaus.
absolutely great adventure and views especially through switzerland.
