Spectrum Marina wifi

3G from Three

Just another vote for giving up on Spectrum : I also use 3, and the iPhone as a personal hotspot. Their all you can eat one month contract is £25, which seems good value to me.

The alternative is their new MiFi personal 3G network device, they boosted the speed and I noticed the difference. £85 include 3 mths / 3gb allowance.

I use Spectrum here at Brighton Marina, I think the fact that I'm very close (about 50 metres) to one of the aerials makes it better (have you tried a wifi booster aerial, can get one for about £7 on ebay?).

Negatives:
They do things without warning you first (changing the username from one you chose to your email address) and you only find out by calling them and asking why you can't log in. Service was particularly bad a while ago now for a good few weeks. I eventually had the engineer's phone number, dealt directly with him and spent a few hours wandering round the marina with him and my laptop trying to test/sort out problems. I feel I do complain to them quite a lot (use landline no. 01442 205500).

Positives:
Most of the time it's quite good, good enough usually to stream video (BBC iplayer usually works, youtube sometimes have to wait for stuff to load, TV Catchup I'd say 50/50). I got an extra 3 months free out of them for poor service. Sometimes the poor service isn't actually their fault, e.g. we had problems with the BT lines feeding the wifi routers. As there's no data limit it's much better value for a heavy user (I am as I use internet a lot and also to watch a bit of TV) than using a dongle, works out at £10/month if you pay for 12 months. It's not perfect but it's definitely the best option for now...

The iPhone won't give same speeds as the latest high speed dongle, and even the latest high speed MiFi doesn't perform quite as well.

You can buy one of the Three high speed dongles with a fixed amount of data download (use that first), then put a one month contract sim in it. If you have a One Plan contract sim in your iPhone, you can use that in the MiFi and dongle as well. Bit of a faff, but works.

Does anyone know what Spectrum wifi is like in the buildings in the Marina? Am looking to move into a property in the marina, and would be working from home quite a bit. i've heard reports that it's "limited" - but I'm not sure whether that means that the signal is poor all the time, or that it drops occasionally.

Just wondering whether the connection issues are only on boats?

Whoops! I forgot to explain that I'm asking about Brighton marina. I'm just trying to work out whether to go for a dongle (with download/usage limit) or risk it with Spectrum, which, judging from this forum, can be a bit hit or miss
