Spectacular harbour entrances

A long held ambition was to enter La Rochelle at the helm of our own boat. This we did last July, luckily as it turns out as I believe that the harbour and/or marina are still closed after the awful gales earlier this year. Spent a very pleasant week there in the bassin des chalutiers (apart from being eaten alive by mossies!), baking hot with very pleasant company in the form of a lovely couple off a HR 48ish footer, hope they didn't mind Debs calling it a Massey Fergusson, suppose it's an easy mistake to make!
Certainly the most spectacular/beautiful harbour entrance we saw in the 4 months spent on the W coast of France.

Good to hear you got away for 4 months. We are also at home awaiting the urm - improved weather.

Well my vote goes to Active Pass.....Now a no go area for cargo ships however I always looked forward to the sight and sounds as we took our bulkers through during the 60s and 70s though must admit my heart was in my mouth as our two roaring tigers delivered full power o get us round the twisty channel as we headed for Vancouver through the Gulf Islands. Now the domain of BC Ferries so I can still get my fix

It certainly looks impressive from where I sit, olde worlde castles are a bit thin on the ground out here.

That La Rochelle entrance was our dream too from the first time we saw a picture of it in one of Adlard Coles pilot books. We managed it many years back, probably over 20 years as, I remember we had Decca then but not GPS and the French Decca chain was already closed down which made the fixes quite approximate running off the Spanish chain or the UK one! We didn't stay inside though and went back out to park in Minimes marina. I also think Dartmouth is a spectacular entrance.

Another vote for Dartmouth as my UK entrant.
Rhodes Town is pretty good, but entering the crater at Santorini is spectacular.

Any harbour looks great, when you're heading in out of the teeth of a full gale!! Milford Haven is quite an entrance also.

Can't compete with those specatular med scapes, here's entrance to Dingle Harbour with a gaggle of Brooms old and new heading out into the Atlantic swell

Bonifacio for me as well .. nowhere near as experienced as most here , but JFM's photos are very close to explaining how the Cala becomes a harbour / marina and the colour of the water? .. just to die for. That also reminds me that the maritime cemetery is worth finding to read the inscriptions and see the view.

Very different but interesting .. Mahon. First for me this year ...
