The sprayhood on Treble C (Hunter Horizon 27 TK) is 12 years old and showing signs of age.

Last year I replaced much of the stitching and this week one of the 3 plastic windows has blown in and the other 2 have slight tears.

So do I replace the hood or just the windows ?

Has anyone any ideas and importantly can you recommend someone for new windows or an entire new hood?

Come to that the dodgers are also on their knees - same source?

Any help as always much appreciated.

You can sew in new windows fairly easily on a domestic sewing machine, there is a knack in doing it in that you sew in the new window before removing the old. There was an article in PBO, I think a few months ago. Use double sided tape to secure the new to the sprayhood before sewing. You can get materials from Pointnorth or Kayospruce. Or ask a locak sailmaker how much - a friend from memory had new windows fitted for about £100 a while back. Dodgers can also be made easily, materials all available from the two sources above. Don't forget to use Bonded Polyester thread for all sewing.

Borderline call I reckon.

From memory replacement windows = 30% of total hood cost (assuming rest of fabric is in serviceable condition)

If the new windows extend the sprayhood life by only 3 years you would be better off going for a complete replacement. But keeping extra £££'s in the bank seems like a good option too.

You may find the fabric has been weakened by the sun. I knew ours had gone when my hand went through it!

I've not replaced just the windows but as other have mentioned you're supposed to do it before the old window fails completely. Failing that I guess you could 'stick' the new window on while the hood is up. Double sided tape and window stuff is available from kayospruce. Beware it is VERY sticky.

Acrylic canvas is best as it has good UV resistance. For dodgers use uncoated acrylic and for sprayhoods use coated acrylic. If you look on Kayosp-ruce website you'll get all the info you need:- http://www.sailcloth.co.uk/ They are also very helpful if you phone them and next day delivery. They do a good catalogue which I prefer to looking at a website. Pointnorth also do all the materials and instructions, see:- http://www.profabrics.co.uk/
I replaced my windows two years ago but have now had to replace the sprayhood as it had finally gone too far.

How does one remove the old windows if you have already sewn the new ones on top?

Am I missing something here?

Surely the windows are sewn in from the inside of the hood - You'll end up with nice clear plastic windows and on the outside of which will be scratched and ripped old ones???

Our Hood is now 13 years old and we were quoted £500 for a new one. The Sailmaker at Southsea Marina replaced our three windows for £75 just 2 years ago and we think we'll get another few years use. I suppose it depends on the overall condition of the rest of the hood and how deep your pockets are.

Sew in the new ones, then cut out the old ones by cutting the window material itself, not its stitching. You leave a thin strip of old window round the edge, but that doesn't really matter.

Sewing in new windows if the old ones aren't there to hold the shape will ne next to impossible.
