I'm looking at possibly buying a trapper 500 that has "Sparlight" gold anodised spars. I'd want to replace the current roller boom furling system witha slab reefing system.

Can this be done easily using the existing boom? Or would I need to replace the boom, if so, does anyone know if Sparlight still exist (Can't seem to find them on the web) or way I might try looking for a replacement.

Cheers.

Sparlight is dead.
You could rivet a Barton fitting to the side of the boom, and cleats at the forward end, and just ignore the rolling gear. I did this (on a Nic 35) with pretty good results. S.S. Spars 01703-331714 and Roger Plumb 01243-372093 are/were stockists of old Sparlight kit and dispensers of kind advice.

Having been forced into getting a new boom with built in slab reefing and enough strength for a loose footed sail I would recommend it any day rater than spend time and money on loads of fittings etc. Price up a diy boom kit and see where it comes in terms of price. A word of warning over your potential mast, check the spreader roots carefully for cracks as well as corrosion of the mast at the base of the socket - a common problem with these Sparlight masts.

I am in a similar situation with a Sabre 27 I have just bought. Sail is rigged for slab reefing on the roller boom, but I can see no rams-horn hooks at forward end of the boom. Is there something I can fit here that will do the job?
