We have had a lot on Volvo spares over the last few weeks, to-day I phoned up to check price for a regulator for our dynastart fitted to our Saab engine.

Phone call went

regulater for a dynastart how much please

what make

Bosch I think

That will be £800

How much

£800

For a dynasart regulater

Yes £800

And we thought Volvo wer bad.

Still don't beleive it, fortunately we also have a alternater fitted.

Re: £800 F###### Hell

Is it not possible to get a reg from a normal alternater , even if you have to run the wires out to the unit it would be worth it . Quite a few jap engines have a seperate unit .Also you could get a new one made from scratch .

I remember...

.. spending a good part of a charter cruise a few years back re-building this unit on a Sabb diesel in Greece.

The best solution is to convert your engine to a modern alternator & conventional starter motor setup.

Your present arrangement is like most compromises, it is not a very good example of either a starter or a generator - it isn't an alternator and the switchgear is vulnerable in the salt environment.

The starter can be left as a starter but you will need to get hold of a suitable alternator - and just about anything will be an improvement on the original generator. A visit to a vehicle dismantlers is called for. I prefer Bosch or Femsa as these have good sturdy slip rings; the Lucas ACR range have an end cap arrangement which eventually results in the central brush drilling a hole in it.

You will need to mess around with pulleys and drive belts - the latter needs a visit to the fan belt section of Halfords.

Good luck; several people have performed this conversion and it is worthwhile not only in terms of reliability and simplicity but in vastly increased charging output too

I had one of these things in my last boat but one. When the dynastarter stopped charging I had it rebuilt for £130 at a place in Guildford.

However I always thought that if it went wrong again I would bite the bullet and convert it to a alternater charging.

I always hated that engine dispite all the praise that is traditionally heaped on them (possibly by people who dont own them)

Mine had been fully rebuilt by Savages in Emsworth just before I bought it but after only 5 years of gentle use had reduced its self to having a complete rebuild at Cutlers for just short of £1000... just before I sold the boat... That was just for new cylinder liner new big end bush and valves grind in.

In between times it hated starting and when it did start, frightened other boat owners and young children.

Only good thing was that I developed almost 100% succees rate at picking up my mooring undersail and singlehanded... have fun... Nick

Re: I remember...

Good idea to convert... I've got the wiring diagram for the conversion (dead simple) if you need it. (PM me)

You can eliminate the regulator box completely by using the starter solenoid from an early mini. The solenoid is mounted on the bulkhead or inner wing, I think. Should get one for a quid.

There! saved you £799!

Re: £800 F###### Hell

For those that have not met up with these things a Dynastart is a gadget that is trying to be both a DC generator and a starter motor. It usually works moderatly well as a starter motor but is decidely iffy as a DC generator. As others have remarked add an ordinary alternator setup (which are much more efficent anyway). Discard the fancy relay thing used to switch the Dynastart between being a generator and a starter motor. Re-rig the connections so that no switching is required and then add a starter soleniod so that it just works as a starter.
