At this very moment there are three frenchmen trying to get their yacht off the rocks at Tresco having dragged their anchor very early this morning and ended up aground amongst the rocks.
Having been up and seen the predicament they are in I don't fancy their chances of a good recovery very much.

The anchor looked a bit small for the boat!!

What's the weather like and state of tide? They must be really frantic if the boat is in danger of being lost. Irrespective of the cause, I feel for them.

It's a nice sunny day, wind top end force 5 from the wnw. Sea state to the north of Tresco is 'orrible so they may have suffered from a bit of swell when trying to get off.

I haven't heard anything further since I got back in so don't yet know if they got off or not, I shall endeavour to find out shortly.

We did get a few pictures earlier but haven't posted them anywhere and I don't want to get into the in's and out's of how to post them here either.

The anchor looked like a little F.O.B. couldn't have been more than 15lb, the boats name is 'Wann gane' out of Brest apparently chartered from a friend or soon to be ex-friend

Just had the latest and she was towed off safely and has now just picked up a mooring bouy in St Mary's harbour.

makes a change from raiding the pub on ginnick land.

You............obviously!

Could there possibly be more than one sailor who would want to make a joke about other sailors in trouble??????

A rather aggressive entry to the forum but welcome anyway. If you were a little more aware of the history you would know that I get a little pissed off by people constantly vaunting their superiority over the French and it was in that context I made the remarK.

John

My apologies, John!

I have not had time to browse the forums properly until to-day and therefore did not get a chance to "know you"!

I concur with your views!

I wouldn't worry about these French bashers. Behind their veneer of bravado lies only the insecurity that goes with an intense jealousy of the French success story; and all things French!

All in all, I am more than a little shocked at the general 'bog standard' of interaction that ruins much of the Scuttlebutt forum. In many cases it's threads are reduced to the level of the bar room brawl and a lager lout mentality!

I had expected someting more useful, more sustainable, something of value. Where did I get the idea that sailors are generally 'educated and well informed people'? I am obviously out of touch.

However, nothing on the forum shocked me like the recent long thread on John Paul 2. I was appalled at the levels some of the posts sunk to. As a great and very brave man of peace lay dead and billions of people mourned, grieved and regretted his passing, many of the Scuttlebutt scoffers appeared to dance and mock all he represented; and all those good people to whom he was the only light on a long dark road.

I am more than a little surprised that the administrator allowed it!

Indeed I am more than a little surprised that he allows much of what he does!

Cheers
Jason

No problem Jason. Come to some of the meets and you will see that there is a fine bunch of people there.

When you get to know them a bit better you will realize that there is a lot of banter and deliberate winding up. Some others get in on the act and take things at the first degree and that is when things can degenerate. We did however sink to some pretty low points on that thread but you should read what Kim the moderator wrote about it.

At what point do you stifle free speech? What right have we to cut somebody's comment because we do not like the way he has expressed himself ? We do nevertheless by the same token have the right to respond.

What gets me though is the constant French bashing - I believe that it has reached the point where it is no longer tongue in cheek - by certain obviously ill-informed people.

I have lived in 6 different countries and by choice enjoy participating in multi-cultural meetings. My conclusion is that there are very few fundamental differences due to ethnic or national characteristics. There is simply the same diversity in France as you have in England with the same cocktail of wonderful and sh-one-tty people.

There does however seem to be one trait in the English (not British) character ; that of wanting to give lessons to others. I saw it in business: one memorable example is where the English wanted to demonstrate how much more efficient they were by comparing two factories with similar products and outputs. The study was quietly shelved when it was shown that the French factory had the same output with 2/3 the staff !

It is also worth considering that a typical perception of the English by the French is of the binge-drinking football hooligan.

And very lowering to thinking that their perception of us is probably somewhat more accurate than our perception of them /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
