Evening all

Am planning to sail down tom La Linea - southern Spain for a few weeks holiday, leaving the boat there and returning later in the year and bringing her back. At the club this evening I was told that I need to apply for a visa. This is news to me - can someone enlighten me pse, I don't get a visa if I fly to Malaga on holiday. He was going on about the Schengen zone.

Many thanks for all replies

I suppose it depends what nationality you are. If from a Schengen zone country, there's obviously no problem at all. For other countries there may be some restrictions, or even a visa requirement. I once got lumbered with interpreting for a Kiwi who had out-stayed his welcome and got picked up by the Spanish police while passing from Spain to Gibraltar. Fortunately they didn't know what they were supposed to do with him so they finally said that if he turned round and went back where he came from (into Spain!) they would forget all about it. So we went back to La Linea Yacht Club and rowed to Gibraltar.

If you are an EU citizen there is no problem but with a name like Tarik the Spanish might want to know if you are related to your namesake - the chap who conquered a goodly part of Iberia ( which he would have known as Algarve) and whose name was corrupted to give us Gibraltar.
