Am I correct in thinking that the Rias marinas will be chocker in late July / August?

We intend to start heading north ending up in the Rias late June / early July en-route UK but we would prefer to have at least a few weeks in the Rias as we pretty much missed them when heading south. Unfortunately we need to return to the UK mid July until the end of August at least before going back to the boat so it would mean laying up in a marina there for 6 weeks or so - I suppose a Coruna is an alternative but it's not our first choice.

Any thoughts? (62' X 2.8 meter draught)

Big boat!

The southern rias usually have space in peak season, Vigo and Bayona. World girdlers left the previous autumn, and the rush through to the Med lot went through in June. I've never had difficulty using any of those marked on the map on this page: http://www.jimbsail.info/tidal-europe/galicia and there are lots more options in Ria de Arosa which I've never been into.

Thanks Jim - we used your guides to great effect last year btw - much appreciated :encouragement:

Viveiro: good shelter and not too expensive (cheaper than la Coruna)

Ooh yes, Vivero. I went with quite a big mono and after 3 days the harbour master said look, I am gonna have to charge you something cos the police boat is right behind you. he said this in Spanish, and i sorta picked up the jist of it. So I gave him 20 euros, and it was fine. After three days we went out to see what the sea was like, iffy, so came back, and won gasps from bystanders as we slottd back into the same space...

We overwintered in Viveiro 2013/14 and can highly recommend the marina. The manager at the time (Fernando) and his team are excellent and his dog is a delight! It's very reasonable priced and Fernando is very reasonable with applying the pricing. At your length you would probably be alongside on the pontoon which accommodates the Guardia Civil although they may have their own gated spot by now. He speaks English and responds to emails promptly so easy to find out more for yourself.

when we lived in la Rochelle for many years we would head south to the northern Spanish coast then Portugal for our summer holiday cruise and we never ever encountered a place where we were not welcome or could not be given a berth.

Can't believe it has changed much in the last few years. So many places, so little time!

We were in the Rias last summer in July and August and were never turned away from a marina. It may be worth spending a night in a marina in the Rias Bajas (perhaps Sanxenxo) to pick up your Galician Marina Passport. Once you've visited one marina, you get a discount in all the others. Worth checking out.
