Hi All,
Had a little mishap with spade rudder and a lea shore sandbank and broken prop.
Need to drop the rudder and would welcome any suggestions. Haven't done this on this breed of boat before, there seems to be a top nut, atop bearing mounted in the "aft cockpit seat. the nuts screws down onto a large flat washer, sat on/in a bronze tiller square. The boat is wheel steer, although this may be a more recent addition. There is a quadrant bolted on to the stainless rudder stock and a deep rudder tube.
In during the grousing the vessel landed on the rudder and the in the rescue was dragged a way across some seemingly lumpy sand banks.
The rudder appears to jammed on full lock, the stock may have bent, or the top of the rudder could be jammed against the hull. The bronze square atop the stock seems to have travelled passed (or over) the stop and the cable from the quadrant to the wheel has come off. The boat is now back in it's berth I would like free the rudder, potentially by dropping it and seeing if will centre. Although a haul out and inspection is in order, towing the boat the 12 miles to a slip will be rather difficult as it only wants to head starboard!
Any suggestions or experience to share would be very gratefully received.
Cheers,
