What a useful thread (!), good practical advice and it's given me an idea on how to solve a small problem on my boat. I have been wondering how I can secure a 115Ah battery into its tray, a webbing strap would be a simple effective solution.

minimum V69. but V138 better. Go for UV stabilised thread from a reliable supplier (poss Sailrite, Toomers, etc)

Apologies - I started the thread and then disappeared for a while, it got a little longer than I expected so will read properly tonight. Thanks, Tony'

I made a trisail without a sewing machine (!). Instead of eyes I used webbing, and a hot needle to preprick the holes along a pencilled zigzag. Strong as all get out, in the event.

You will not damage a domestic sewing machine with webbing. The weave is very open and its easy to sew. My wife's machine copes with several layers no problem.

If your wife has a fancy machine then it won't have a very powerful motor. My local sewing machine shop sold me an older simple, straight or zigzag, machine for £46 and it goes through four layers of canvas or sail fabric easily. Not worth risking her machine, or wrath, for that little money.
