Well you lot kept Southwold a secret didnt you.

After being told numerous horror stories about getting in, getting out and mooring up we decided to ignore them all and head down there on our recent Norfolk Broads trip. What a gem it is. We will certainly be going back as soon as we possibly can.

Just a quick note to give a status report on Southwold entrance after our rather blowy winter.

I'm pleased to report that we're in pretty good shape.
I've run up and down the river and entrance using sidescan sonar and at Low water springs last week there was 5' 6" in the shallowest point of the main channel near the inland end of the new sea wall.
Note that the new harbour wall has been built out 2m so you need to be no more than 30' from the wall from the lifeboat station to the left hand bend for the deepest water.

On Sunday, 2 hours after LW we sailed 52' Josephine out which with the keel up draws 1.8m.
We saw 1.9m a the shallowest.

I had a chat with one of our locals who brought in a fishng boat at LW on friday that draws 6' and he says he didn't touch.

My boat draws 6'4" and I'll stick to my guide of 2 1/2 hrs after and 3 hours before LW to be on the safe side as if I run aground I'll never hear the end of it.

Edit: Oooh I nearly forgot, the piles are currently being knocked into place for floating pontoons right outside the HM office, plus Peter (HM) is fitting a shower block into his hut as well.
Not quite 21st century but I think we're up to half way through the 20th century now. :)

You do realise that one of the main reasons for having the East Coast forum is to spread tales of vicious shallows, clinging mudbanks and ugly towns? That way, we dissuade visitors...

So I gather.

Any horror stories for our tip to the North East this year? :D

We are starting from Lincoln, first stop Grimsby, so one way or another this year we will be North of Lowestoft :D

I never thought I'd ever say this but ... if we make it to Grimsby I'll be fairly chuffed!

(Actually, the ambitious not to be taken too seriously "target" is Hartlepool but we'll need a perfect first week to get that far)

We have equally ambitious plans to get from Lincoln to Eyemouth and back in 16 days :D

We need good weather gain this summer!

If we make it to Grimsby we wont have time to be chuffed. It will be a quick shower, bite to eat and bed as it will be a late arrival and an early departure the next day ..........
