Southwold

Just a quick note re the entrance at Southwold this year (2013)

"Somersault" draws 6'4" and we arrived from Brighton today 3 1/2 hours before HW.
The least depth we saw was 8'4"

There appears to be a bit more of a shoal from the south entrance pier than last year but we still had 9' at around 60' from the south Pier cutting the corner.
So my advice is when approaching from the South, to keep off the entrance by approx 1/4 mile before turning in square.

Approaching from the north I'd favour being almost 1 mile out before turning in and running straight into the harbour.

Once in, favour the North of centre side of the channel until up to the moorings.
Peter the Harbour master (ch12) is pretty much up to date if you have any qualms.

Our summer cruise plans have changed from going south to staying local-ish so this will hopefully include a visit to Southwold , probably during first week in Aug , anyone else thinking of going up that way ? , also i want to try Wivenhoe as never been there either ..

Nige - we might be up there that week. If you have kids on board then speak nicely to the harbourmaster and ask for a pontoon rather than the inevitable rafting up on the stagings. The pontoons are also not directly opposite the Anchor pub which can be noisy on a weekend evening.

Jane and I are out and about the first week in August too and spookily have Southwold and Wivenhoe pencilled in as potential ports of call.

Southwold for sure I'd be aiming for midweek rather than the weekend although I don't mind being rafted up as long as it's us on the outside (our small size makes it a nuisance if we're the inside boat especially on the stagings where people need to get to the ladder)

Javelin ,
Do you have a phone number for the HM , I'd just like to find out how busy it is there , also a previous post said to arrive a hr or two after low water is this still ok for 1m draught .

Coming from Woodbridge I reckon we'd get there about that sort of time ..

Hope that helps, didn't mean to butt in!

Tonight it's busy - Lots of Dutch in but as said above Peter will try and find another berth for you.
The Dutch tend to arrive in packs of 5 or 6 boats so tomorrow it could be empty - ish.
In fact some big boats (40' +) are taking to lying against the new sea wall next to the lifeboat station.

At low water springs last month I poled the entrance (a marked stick always seems to give me a better result than the sidescan sonar especially as there is so much sediment in the water)
The two shallow areas of the channel are just downstream of the lifeboat station where I poled a max of 5' 2" and the other is just upstream of the end of the new sea wall where I got 5' 5"
The rest of the channel had over 6' in the channel.

I've marked the deep water route on the photo attached.
The white-ish shaded area are the shallowest section of the channel.

That all said a Sadler 32 (I guess bilge keel) came in the other day bang on a very big low water springs with no issues at all.

Apparently I've exceeded my photo quota so you'll have to go to,
