Southsea Premier marina

Any berth holders at Southsea, can you give me the pro and cons of being there, I am looking to move from a swing mooring in Southampton to a marina closer to me. Many thanks

We’ve been Southsea marina berth holders for a good few years and have been very happy with our choice. From the marina, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the Solent and there is a local-knowledge back eddy that avoids the hard spring flood up the ‘Run’. Access to the marina is half tide, but if you are travelling anywhere west you’ll need use the top of the tide anyway to take advantage of a favourable stream - the same is true on your return. There is also a holding pontoon outside and marina staff will move your boat to and from your berth if you wish.

Southsea is probably the cheapest of the big-name Solent marinas, the onsite bar is excellent and the Bombay Bay one of the best Indian restaurants around. We like the ‘unpretentious’ ambience; it’s a nice place to spend time on your boat, and yes the staff are indeed friendly and helpful.

Space and depths inside the marina are relatively tight and there are not many boats over 10m and 1.6m draught. Car access is generally reasonable from the M27 to the marina. In many ways Southsea marina is a hidden gem (oops now everybody knows) and if you do decide to consider it, feel free to pm me for more information.

Have you considered Sparkes ? I am not certain it’s really in Southsea so far as land facilities are concerned ?

Thinking of going with premier marinas as like the 42 nights free at other premier marinas deal with berth holders, MDL only give a 20% discount on using their other marinas

MDL decided in their stupid wisdom to get rid of their Freedom Berthing option. They are proving themselves just a property serices company - its in their name I suppose. Such a shame their priorties lie other than in boating.

So is southsea a lot cheaper per metre than say Gosport which gives greater freedom of access ? I can see the attractions of Swanwick of course of Dartmouth though using those fee nights if you can get in of course.

I have been a Southsea annual berth holder for 27 years and love it. Very good security, quick access to the sea, or play in the harbour for short trips, lovely marina crew, lots of social activities you can join in or ignore. Nice bar/cafe and excellent Indian restaurant. Good yard facilities and engineers on site. The only downside is the 6 hour tidal access but there are plenty of ways round that. The marina staff will move the boat out to the holding pontoon if you plan ahead. There is an introductory scheme where an existing berth holder and you both get a discount for an introduction so don't contact the marina direct or you'll miss out!
