Southern Ireland - Arrival Ports?

There is a yacht pontoon in Dunmore East Co. Waterford. Some harbour works are planned which may disrupt,so more info may surface before long.
Approach is straightforward except if the tides are Springs and you can get wind over tide effects on approaches off the HOOK LIGHTHOUSE.
( it's big!).Irish Cruising Club south and East Coasts publication covers the area and more.
There are a goodly number of watering holes and Hotels up the steep access road to the main street.
Busy commercial fishing harbour, but pleasure vessels are tolerated, say up to 12M or thereabouts.

This season we are hoping to head to Ireland and on up to Scotland. We are leaving from Plymouth and are hoping to stop off in Falmouth, the Scillies and then on to Ireland. Having not sailed to Ireland before, what is the collective wisdom regarding the best place to arrive? Preference would be a mooring buoy or alongside pontoon with a half decent town/village with plenty of pubs. Any other tips on going across to Ireland also gratefully received - crossing times, journey times, must see's etc. :encouragement:

Having taken a friend's boat from Cardiff to Oban 'round the outside' two-up - one of the best trips I ever made - having visited the SW coast a few times and trogged up and down the East Coast at other times, I would always now recommend going right-about, sailing the SW then the West Coast. It is simply in a different league - and not to be missed.

From Cornwall, I'd recommend heading to the Scillies, and departing to the NW from New Grimsby Sound. There are half-a dozen fine and easy all-weather landfall harbours - Cork, Kinsale, Glandore, Baltimore, Crookhaven - so let the wind and sea state dictate. Then carry the tide down west and around to Beara ( Castletown-Bearhaven ), then Dingle..... then there are scores of nooks..... Inishmore, Inishbofin, Blacksod Bay, Teelin, Burtonport ( if you must, for fuel ), Sheephaven/Downies, Loch Swilly..... Port Ellen/Sound of Jura..... and many more fine crannies up along the route to Oban.

Let Yachting Monthly's staff writer and broadcaster Libby Purves be your guide.....

Suppose I should add an update. Many thanks to all the contributions made here. In the end, we went from Falmouth to Scilly to Crosshaven in Ireland. As 2015 wasn't a vintage year for the weather, it precluded going west around Ireland which was a shame. We ended up doing fewer stops up the east coast, Crosshaven -Arklow-Dun Laoghaire -Lamlash (Isle of Arran)-Port Bannatyne (Isle of Bute). Really enjoyed Ireland and would have loved to have spent more time cruising there. The plan is to now cruise the west coast of Scotland in 2016 :-)
