Southerly 38

Just waiting for someone to come up with a stern quarters view of a Contessa 32 or(dare one say it) a Twister and say

"Does my bum look small in this?"

Fashions change in mysterious ways!

They have always been " Big" but they are getting enourmous .....

Cue list of boats that look too big for their length:

Ben Oceanis 40
Hanse 400
Bav Vision 40
Oyster 46
Jeanneau 39DS/42DS
Most catamarans
MG Spring 25 (big fan, but they look so wrong!)
Westerly Seahawk
Moody 376 (oddly, I find the 346 looks better somehow)

Am sure there are plenty others, these are just ones that spring to mind.

Well it looks fine to me and being Steven Jones I am sure it will sail well. I saw one at the boat show and they are well made but...

I kept banging my head in the aft cabin, and if you look at the internal photos there is a lack of lockers in the saloon and forward cabins. I am sure this gives the boat a spacious feel, but it is not very practical.

I do dislike the tendency to trade good locker space for an open plan approach. It's one thing Bav do well - lockers everywhere.

Thanks Snooks,

It's this angle where I think she looks fugly.

Not really my cup of tea but I can see a lot of thought there..

The two small wheels dont dominate but let you get comfortably out to the lee/windward side, self tacking jib and stowaway main, high boom, lots of window, back end access /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif,max volume yet fine entry.

Are Southerly the UKs sole remaining major boatbuilder ?

Rustler Bowman, Oyster, Crabber (ex Select) in the yachty side of things

but the Mobos are far more successfull with:

Princess, Sunseeker, Fairline, Sealine, Broom, Haines, Aqua Star, Corvette, Kingfisher, Sheerline, Orkney, Dale Nelson to name a few /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Northshore are the one thats doing reasonably well at the moment. Rustler is a small volume outfit.

But have you seen the Southerly 32? Makes the 38 look slim! Its humungous, but apparently sails well. Certainly its by far the biggest 32 I've ever been on board and that includes any of the French.

I think it's the new Stephen Jones look. He's done something similar with the smaller Southerly and also the Sadler 290. It's definitely not pretty to my eyes and it's hard to believe the stern is by the same guy who designed the best bum in the business - the Starlight 35.

It seems to be one shot that makes me agree with you, when he pans from bow to stern from abeam. otherwise from all other angles it is a great looking boat IMO.

Would have to see one in real life. Though they do seem to have brought back of the line from the coach roof so far aft it does seem to make her look a bit chopped off. A shame as from the video this extended roof line only appears to be combing and only there for aesthetics.

One thing I really used to like about southerly was they were not afraid of saloons, but like all other brands they are now bringing up the freeboard and shrinking the saloon roof as though saloons you can actually hold onto and give a boat individual characteristics are now somehow offensive. I will never understand this.
