my steering cables feel a little bit prickly if you run your hsnd over them, in fsct on close ispection there are wire strands about two milimeters sticking out. do these cables need replacing? is it hard and costly, where should i get the cables from, i must add the new fuel tank hasn't been fitted into place yet so access is easy. any advise welcomed

Is it the inners or outers that are fraying? If inners fray, then they will jam as those strands stick thro the outer at some point. If it is the outers, they are mainly under compression as the inners pull against them and it is les critical.

My steering Bowden cables ('73 Westerly Pentland) have solid inners and are pretty standard like outboard control cables. If in doubt, Google it! There will be lots of suppliers out there some of whom will make bespoke cables if needed.

To replace cables if hard to access, undo at each end & then tape to the new ones to act as a "fish" when you pull the old ones out.

I think you are at cross purposes.........Searush is talking Teleflex.... I think you are talking 7/36 stainless wire?????

A few broken wires on 7/36 are no big deal .. Give an idea how widespread.

I am presuming that your 105 is set up the same as ours in terms of the cable run for the steering. If so then although it is a pain it is by no means too difficult using the old cable as a mouse and pulling the new ones through the system. I agree with previous poster that a couple of strands loose are no big deal at the moment but probably worth doing at some stage soon to give you peace of mind if nothing else.
New cable should be able to be sourced from a decent swindlery.
Have you considered joining the Southerly Owners Association? Couldn't see your name in the member's list so presume you're not one. They publish a technical topice CD with an absolute wealth of info all aspects of Southerly maintenance and the like. Contact details here .

Good luck and all that. Feel free to pm me if I can help any more.
