Anyone own one of these or know anything about them. Looking at buying one and would like to know more about it. Any boat test or reviews available anywhere?
I used to crew regularly on a Southerly 100 almost twenty years ago.
It seemed well constructed, and Southerly definitely have a reputation for building their boats well. The keel box was not intrusive and the layout generally made good use of the space.
Performance was Ok but wasn't brilliant. I have a definite recollection of a Sigma 33 whizzing past us on a beat to windward.
A foible of the earlier Southerlies was that the rudder would easily stall and the boat broach to windward if hit by even a moderate gust. I had to learn to leave a large gap when passing to leeward of anything chunky, such as a buoy. I believe the later boats have twin rudders to resolve this.
The boat was brilliant for messing about in the Thames Estuary. The owner knew his stuff and the Southerly allowed him to cut things fine on the depth under the keel. Very fine. If that's the sort of sailing you're looking for, the boat is well worth looking at. I notice however you give your location as Oban so I wonder how much mud-hopping you'd do.
We're very happy with our 115- not had much to do with the 100, but the keel system is as chunky as ours, and the internal joinery as good, if not better. I believe- google the brokers- there were a couple of 100s for sail in PBO brokers ads last month.
Problem is the ones for sale may be a bit of a journey.
Owners Assoc. very good, if a bit S. Coast based, we just got back from AGM this eve.
Some owners had 95 or 100 before trading up to 110 or 115- try the website for info, also builders- Northshore- has some drawings of earlier marks- interior plans etc.
Hope this helps a bit- Les Webb the SOA Sect may be able to let you know more.
