Southend Marina?

Is it in some way somehow less feasible than Brighton or Sovereign Harbour?

Neither of those sites in any way resembled an obvious location for a marina yet look at them now

Doubtless the £500m is for the entire development, not just the marina element

The one snag is how far away the sea is at low water! But even that's not actually insurmountable, just needs money chucking at the problem

It may or may not happen but i can see a market for it (although driving in and out of Southend is not one of my favourite journeys!)

Sounds to me like an attempt to emulate Brighton or Eastbourne where the marina is the headline to give cover for the construction of hundreds of new homes which will sell at 50% more than if they were not right next to a harbour. Even with 1000 berths, a yacht harbour could never earn a sensible return on GBP 500 million.

There have been several proposals for a Southend marina over the years with the previous one just east of the pier if I recall.
I can't see it happening myself.

They should have let Brent Walker build one at the side of the pier and picked it up cheap when he went bust.
The site mentioned this time is close to the Garrison estate which is a very nice development including many of the nice listed barracks houses and amenities. It won’t happen.

Never been but I thought there were marinas on the north French coast which are somewhat tidally constrained by wide expanses of sand.... and the tide range at Southend is probably 5m ish.... so it is possible, just needs a reliable lock gate (and a lot of money..)

The approach will be interesting in a winter NE against a decent spring ebb , this should allow the waves to build up nicely.
The 10 mile fetch from the West down Sea Reach, should be bracing against a flood tide
Protected from the North a bit and wide open to the South.
The short of depths that seagulls can stand up in all around.

Burnham and the Crouch a little up the coast.
Access to shelter in any conditions in the Medway and Queenborough a short hop away.

Southend Marina............sounds like sure fire winner.

Yes it was the Brent walker proposals from about twenty years ago that I was thinking off. At least they had some logic. An artificially walled marina and housing complex built into the sea reducing the distance to the water. More sheltered and hoping it would drag the area up. Still didn't fly.
