Southampton Water today bit of a scare

Why do some boaters not look behind them ??

Going down Southampton water this morning we were following an old looking rib with 3 people onboard . We were both in the main channel. we were not going much faster than the rib but were the overtaking boat, We had given the rib what we thought was plenty of room as they did not look to have much freeboard and did not want to get them wet with wake, All good we thought,

But just as we were about to draw level, The Rib for no obvious reason that we could see just turned to cross the channel on a collision course with us, Luckily we were able to take avoiding action but it was a big of a scare. The people in the rib seem oblivious to all other boaters. they then slowed right down with another boat coming down Southampton water ,whom also had to dramatically alter course, Just seemed that they had no idea of other boats or what they were doing.

Please can we all remember to look behind us every so often and especially when making a major course alteration,

you get numpties evérywhere. Around these parts its locals fishing and wandering around erratically.
If I think the boat(s) anywhere near me haven´t seen me ´(That is I have been watching them for a while and no one looks back) I don´t hold back on the horn.´I nearly got mown down by a small fast local ferry boat. The skipper was facing backwards leading a sing-song. I was holding course as the vessel being overtaken and it became apparent no-one on the ferry was on watch. We had to turn hard to starboard to escape being rammed.

Because clearly the person who posted it is perfect. I think it's called up their own backside. Bet they have never done anything wrong. Funny when I was coming into Portsmouth on Saturday I was cut up by a sailor who must have been in a race who did not have his motoring cone up was overtaking me and then turns hard to port in front me to get in haslar. But that's acceptable practice as it's only motorboats that do that.

We've all done things wrong, my point (which I think you got) was that it gets tiring that mobo's are blamed for everything. However, common sense should prevail - anyone out on the water should be aware of whats going on around them for their own safety as well as others. If the timing had been different and they had pulled across the bows and the OP couldn't take evading action in time and the rib had been sunk and lives lost would we be having the same discussion? However, on the flip side it is quite possible that they were inexperienced and just out to have fun so may have been naivety rather than incompetance.

I purposely worded the "throttle happy " bit because there are some power boat skippers who have total disregard for the upheaval they cause with their wake ,equally there are sensible power boaters who are very conscious of their wake ,just the same as there are arrogant racing type yotties who think col regs don't apply to them and there are sociable careful cruising sailors .

Sadly today there is a lot of inherented money about and probably most middle aged people have paid off their mortgage etc so aunt Maud's house inherentence is burning a hole in their already laden pocket so off they go and buy a large boat , power or sail , and off they go .....no knowledge of col regs or anything else nautical . My boat has been damaged 3 times in its Marina berth by such people !!! My insurance company (Saga) has informed me that it is likely that the underwriters will increase my excess to £2000 in other words I will be self insured for the first £2000 through no fault of my own !! Peed off ?? You bet .

I've sorted that one - I intend selling my kids inheritance for my pension and living on the boat when I retire . We're with SAGA at the moment but just about to shop around as the car policy bill has been slashed and I'm hoping we can do the same with the boat policy - although the cover does seem particularly good.

That doesn't make sense. If you know who hit you then claim on their insurance, and your excess wont go up. If you don't know who hit you, then you also can't know that it was a reckless newbie in a large boat bought with inherited money?

It may not make sense, it may not be moral and it may even be wholly unfair but insurers do this - it is just an unpleasant fact and a manifestation of what can be best described as sharp practice.
