I got an email offering 3 issues of ST for £4.95. Following it up, the default way to pay is "Continuous Credit Card" which is I understand a dodgy scheme that is very hard to limit to one payment.
It also offers a Direct Debit option which I think is easy to stop though you must remember to do so.
Can an expert in banking matters tell me if I got all that right?

Personally I would go for the Direct Debit option. You definitely can cancel that easily enough - need to advise the magazine, to ask them to stop taking payments. But having done so can generally ALSO (but not instead of) put a stop at your bank account end.

Or just use the Readly app - all the magazines you could ever want and more (incl ST, PBO, YM etc) for £7.99 a month.

Continuous Credit card is a new idea and very risky, gives the supplier the chance to take out of your bank what they say you own them. Often used by scammers. D/D is the way to go, they are obliged to tell you is the amount changes. I have stopped a number of magazine subs I just email the supplier and tell him I am stooping the D/D on such and date. I also tell my bank to cancel the D/D from the same date.

Not so new, but definitely risky.

Over 25 years ago, one of my sons used my credit card to prove he was over 18 for a website of special interest to young teens. Then I noticed a debit to a US site. Sonny hadn't realised he was signing up to a subscription. I called my bank who were totally unhelpful. I'd have to report it to the Police as a theft to get them to act. The porn co was far more helpful, pulling the plug after a 5 minute phone call.

As an aside I dumped Barclays shortly after - not the only nail in their coffin, but a pretty big one.
