South Glamorgan coast path

Nearly got a buttered crumpet but was beaten off by Martin with a boathook and a fierce dog /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Alcyone> I got back home about 9pm tonight. I got into Cardiff a bit later than hoped for on Saturday as I didn't want to cut inside the Cardiff Spit buoy (near Monkstone) at low water. I then got involved with a tackathon against the tide to try to get round into Cardiff. This took time. The late arrival in Cardiff meant that I couldn't take up csail's coffee stop offer (thanks for the offer csail) as it was getting late. I made to to Llantwit Major in the dark. There was some good scenery out there. It would be nice to see more of it in the daylight and more at low water. The Aberthaw Sea Wall is a great feature: running along the top of that is great fun.

I made it round Steep Holm too. I went round on Sunday though. There were nice beam reaching conditions round there on Sunday (well it was a beam reach if you were heading back to Portishead!).

Are you collecting logged miles for coastal skipper / YM? I am!

That's a fair run, around Steepholm, that is.

To be serious, we had a lovely day on Saturday, and reaching from Barry down to Steephol was brilliant fun. It was a little outside our comfort zone coming back to Cardiff, as I said, earlier. That's ok, we need to do that sort of thing to gain experience.

YM? I've only just done my Day skipper a few months back. I found that very hard and the tutor pushed us all the way. i don't think I'll be up for the YM for a long while. If/When I do that, I want to feel comfortable in my abilities, and I'm far from that at the moment.

I still want to log miles - it's a personal thing. It gives me confidence that I can sail nearly 40 miles in a day. A year ago I'd never sailed a yacht, and didn't own one. Louise and I used to look down into the locks at other boats and say, 'One Day'. On Sat, we were looking up! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Cheers.

Well done Zlod Its been about 20 years since I could do a run like that .I would be puffing a bit walking it now /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just for future reference on a neap tide you can leave the Cardiff North Bouy to port on the way down cutting several miles off the journey from Portishead to Cardiff and avoiding the foul tide against you coming back from the South Cardiff.

Dont do it on a spring tide though unless your confident that you have calculated the tidal height correctly.

csail> Yep. Saw the fossil. It seems to disappear under the pebbles at times, but was on show when I was there. I couldn't see the dinosaur footprints as they were either underwater (or cut off by the water). I was there at high tide.

Graham> Thanks for mentioning the North Cardiff buoy. We used that route last Wednesday night (and Thursday morning) based on your suggestion.
