Hi All,

Just a quick post to gauge interest in a social and/or cruising group in and around South Devon.

There seems to be quite a few local South Devon members in these forums plus many whose boats are berthed/moored locally or who visit from time to time. It has been suggested that we could arrange some gatherings - both on and off water.

We have on our doorstep, what is probably some of the best boating waters in the UK so looking for anyone who's interested, ideas for cruises and places to visit etc.

Although I'm pretty much at the 'novice' boating stage, I'm quite happy to coordinate and participate when able.

As a starter, I'd certainly like to explore some local gems like Salcombe, the Yealm and the Tamar that I haven't yet got around to. These things are often much more fun and safer when done in company!

Ideas? Interested?

We have a group here--> http://www.ybw.com/forums/group.php?groupid=61

Everyone welcome so feel free to join and comment below... :)

Didnt realise that these forum had social groups
How do I get to the group without following your link above?

All the Wokingham group did (and still does) is put a post on the "Virtual Pub" forum.

The worry with the group you've set up might be that people dont find it - as I say without your link I dont think I'd find it.

Maybe I dont understand though.

Anyway, I've signed up to the group and quite a few others have as well.

+1 I had no idea such a group existed nor how to join it.

:) Fair point!

From the blue menu bar beneath the 'Breadcrumbs' (the bit that shows the path to where you are - e.g. Yachting_and_Boating_World_Forums > Motor_Boat_Forum...) select the 'Community' menu and then from the drop down menu, 'Social Groups'.

Alternatively, once you have joined a group, I find that clicking on your own username takes you your profile - from where you can select any of the groups you've joined, is a much quicker method!

There's quite a few groups as you'll see, but there seems to be mixed views on them. The downsides are that posting there will only reach a small audience and it's yet another place to look. The plus side is that thread stay viewable/current much longer. I personally think that makes them an ideal place for local information as if you are visiting an area you could have a look for recommended spots to anchor, best restaurants, local navigation hazards etc etc. All IMHO of course... :D

P.S. adding an event in the virtual pub seems a good idea too! I hadn't been there...

I would not be adverse to a social get together, but now getting confused where to look!! Virtual pub, social group or a post on this forum?

Cheers

:) Valid question to which I don't really know the best answer. I see DevonPhotographer posted in the Virtual Pub in September on the topic of a pub meet and got no responses. (I'm guilty there too as I've not visited before either. :o)

My view is that as long as we're consistent where we post, we'll all know where to look. The Virtual Pub seems to be the 'proper' place - if there is such a thing () and as that's what other groups seem to do, perhaps the most logical?

The next question is probably when? Midweek seems popular with other groups - how does that suit everyone. Before Christmas or after? Any suggestions or preferable dates?

Finally, where? Torbay/Dartmouth seems to have most members, but might not be so easy for those further afield like Exeter/Kingsbridge etc? Is somewhere like Penn Inn or Passage House in Newton Abbot more central/easy to access or should we move around the area even? Food pubs seem to make sense too.

There was already a Plymouth group and thus I created a South Devon Group. Travelling from North Devon is quite a trek, so probably won't be of much interest for social meets. There's no reason why there can't be some crossover/interaction with other nearby groups however.

For cruises etc I think people will travel much further. We found with the Fletcher Rally that folk came from all over and from as far as Sheffield, Birmingham, Nottingham etc. I'm sure any forumites visiting South Devon would be made more than welcome to either event type. :D

I think the idea is perhaps more as a chance to interact and share local knowledge etc with folk cruising the same waters. Group voices also tend to get heard more if there are local issues that affect our passion - like coastguard closures or similar? Thus a 'Devon' group that covered many local harbour authorities and two coastlines would probably be less effective?

I have joined the group, and look forward to meeting.

I may be biased, but would be happy to suggest the Thatched Tavern in Maidencombe as a possible location

I'm guessing that'd be your local then? :D:D:D

Hare and Hounds at Kingskerswell is great for me as I can walk! :p

I only suggested Passage House or Penn Inn because they're fairly easy to find and have plenty of parking, but no problem with Thatched Tavern if everyone can find and park easily?

No suggestions for when, so what about Wed 4th Jan? Unless anyone wants to do a pre-Christmas meet, I'm guessing the first half of December may be too short notice and the second half probably a bit busy for many?

Thatched Tavern in Maidencombe is great for me as well but NoviceRod knows why :D

Joking apart - is the Penn Inn any good for that sort of thing?
I've never bee inside.
Car Park looks OK

Nothing particularly special (a Heavitree House I think?), but spacious and I know the Austin and Mini owners clubs meet there - along with a few others. Popular more for location I think. The Passage House is independent as far as I know, but not been there for a few years. Nice riverside location for summer, not so sure about mid winter!

If most attendees are from The Bay/Dartmouth then perhaps somewhere closer in would be better? Paignton perhaps? I was only thinking from a perspective of travel from outside Torbay - like Teignmouth, Exeter, Totnes, Salcombe and so forth.

I'm probably somewhere near the middle so amenable to anywhere with a bar... :D

Then again, theres always Coombe Cellars.Great big car park, and its nigh on opposite Passage house inn. Even got a jetty for when arriving by boat. You,ll have to time it well though. Jetty dries out at low tide.

Just joined the group, unfortunately live quite a distance away so socials will be hit and miss for us, will be able to catch up at some stage hopefully.
Berthed in Torquay, usualy down every three weeks or there abouts, not so much during the winter but happy to give assistance where we can.

Ok, it's been a week and no further suggestions/preferences on date or location, so I've posted in the 'Virtual Pub'... http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3255968

Sounds good. Im away weekdays but will make sure to be at Maidencombe on the 4th. Its a good venue with a big selection of food and beer. There is access to the beach below which should make it fine for meets by boat. Did a lot of my courting there years ago! If this reply turns up elswhere its because my last attempt went wrong!!

You're more than welcome to join us - we're going for Penn Inn at Newton Abbot for the first meet as the Thatched Tavern is closed Wednesday. We'll reschedule the Thatched Tavern for early February...

I'll be there from about 7:00... looking forward to it. :D
