South coast marina recomendations

Hi all,

we are planning a motorboat trip from Port Solent west along to south coast as far as Falmouth. Can anyone recommend nice marinas (pontoon moorings only) to stay overnight or visit for lunch? etc...

Very much appreciate any ideas

Depends on your cruising speed and how far you want to get in a day. As a Port Solent person you are Premier so check out their offerings for a freebie. I personally very much like Brixham for its character, Fowey for its super location. In the Solent if I am doing a stop at the West end to get the tide I prefer the Dan Bran pontoon in Lymington but seriously considering the Town Quay now its improved. In Plymouth I like Sutton Harbour but its expensive. Very very cheap diesel from the fishermens pontoon on the starboard side above the bridge in Weymouth. Sorry for the random order of all this - just doing train of thought.

Thanks, we are cruising at circa 20 kts, trying to keep it to a max of 2.5 hrs - does Fowey have pontoon moorings? also fancied dropping in to Salcombe but cannot see a marina there?

Thoughts were down to Poole, then over to Weymouth, Brixham, Plymouth, Fowey and finish up at Falmouth over the initial 5 days

Salcombe has no marina but it’s gorgeous.
From port solent going west you really need to stop at Weymouth if you don’t want long days.
I favour staying in the town. Pontoon moorings with lecky. The dean and reddyhoff under the bridge is soul less.
before that you can stop at the end of the solent (Yarmouth or Lymington) or Poole.
In Poole I’d stay on the town quay but all in all I’d choose Yarmouth even though that make day 2 longer.
After Weymouth it’s Brixham, Torquay or The Dart. I’d go to Kingswear in the Dart. With lunch at Dittisham upriver the next day.
Others can take over from there. I tend to go to Salcombe or Guernsey from Dartmouth.

IIRC Fowey only has a mid river pontoon but a cheap river taxi serves it

Salcombe has a pontoon up round the corner in "The Bag".
Fowey has a number of pontoons, one of them is 'far from the madding crown' up river at Mixtowe Pill.
If you're planning to visit Weymouth and stay on the HM visitor moorings, you'll need to book at the moment and space is limited.

Yep and despite what it says in most of the almanacs Mixtowe has power and water. Also has alarming seagulls that attack any bin bags but thats another story. Kingswear is nice but it is on the "wrong" side of the river. No real problem but you would need to cross to get into town. On the other hand you are on the right side for the super steam railway (if its running)

Don’t have the ambience of Berthon though and which is closer to town and hence eateries and other delights if stockingup The one failure of LYH is lack of a decent sized eatery but Mayflower isnt that far but in this post CV world haven’t considered eateries in Lyn as yet .

The only problem you might have is getting a booking if Beaulieu is to be believed until late August. Looking good for Friday though for Lym . Just a shame barbecue rocks look in short supply -some sort 1st world of supply chain issue I guess.
