Hi,
I need to find some SS dome headed screws for a boom fitting I serviced... the remaining ones are about 4.4 mm in diameter... does that correspond to size 8 imperial? Any idea where I can get in marine quality steel?
Thanks,
Crisp

Imperial fixing are a bit of a nightmare; you can only figure out what you need by measuring the diameter and threads per inch accurately. The alternative is taking a sample along to a good local SS fixing supplier - though these are not on everyone's doorstep

What you seem to have could be: 3/16in BSF or 2BA or 3/16in BSW. It may even be easier to re drill and tap for 5mm. I would not worry too much about the grade of stainless for that job or even the the style of head, even plain hexagon heads can be gussied up to look good, in an electric drill.

These people seem to have a fair selection (as do many suppliers that cater for model makers and ald motor bikes):

Machine Screws

I doubt there is any screw, bolt, stud or fastening in existence that can't be found at or by Westgate Fastenings in Lowestoft.

They are far too old school to have one of those new-fangled 'websites' but that's because the staff - all two of them - are so incredibly clued up they just don't need one.
Google for a phone number.
They are the mutt's nuts in this business. And superbly helpful.

Are you sure the screw is 4.4mm in diameter? That doesn't correspond to any commonly used machine thread, imperial or otherwise. A caliper, vernier or digital, or a micrometer is needed to measure the thread diameter accurately, if you've not got one if you have nearby workshops you could ask around to get it measured for a definitive identification.

Personally, I would consider changing it to metric unless it's something like a classic motorbike.
I have a thread pitch gauge, I'd use that to help identify the thread, and/or compare with something 'known'.
There are a lot of 'imperial' threads about, whitworth, BA, UNF UNC etc
