Can anyone suggest a source for small quantities of marine grade stainless steel on or near Sussex coast please?

I need 2metres of 3-4mm diameter rod and about half a metre of bar approx 400mmx6mm

Ring round the local scrap yards. Go round local industrial estate looking for engineering companies, particularly manufacturers of equipment going into the food, petrochemical or pharmacutical industries.

There are two places in Newhaven that would be worth ringing....
Pomfrey Metal Fabrications, Unit N, Quarry Rd. Newhaven 01273-517333 and
Smith Metal Fabrications, Unit J, Rich Ind. Estate, Avis Way, Newhaven 01273-513411

Re: stainless steel and stainless steel.

But as you probably know. there is stainless steel and stainless steel..
For marine use, only the Type 316 L is suitable.
Inside, you can also use type 304...

316L

The "L" stands for low carbon. You only need this grade if welding to prevent localised weld corrosion. 316 is fine for general marine use, it has 2% molybdenum to help resist pitting. 304 doesn't have the molybdenum but it will still last for years in most circumstances.

The name escapes me so far but you could call me on tuesday on 07803 17 97 47
and I' ll dig it out. It's a small firm north of Brighton, recommended by an engineer friend of mine, very good, any thing you want, any quantity.
Cheers.
Maurice.

most stainless steel stockists should be able to supply you with a length of bar, but you will have to take their standard length since the balance after cutting 2m will not be saleable. the flat you want will be more difficult. it is not rolled as a bar and will have to be sheared from a 6mm plate.you would be throwing most of the plate away, so you need to look for somewhere where there might be offcuts etc in (say ) the scrap bin. often you can get a back pocket sale on this basis. contribute to the tea fund.

use 316 as people have said. 304, 302, 321 will stain much more easily. dont use anything that begins with a 4
