Sources for single grade oil

Hi folks,

This forum - and local firms - have been helping me diagnose a Yanmar gearbox problem. (Slipping cone clutches was best guess)

The gearbox has been through a workshop now with 'no fault found' - which just leaves the oil as the possible culprit.

I want to use an oil as close as possible to Yanmar's spec, which for the winter months will be SAE 20 HD. (It's a KM3P box on a 3GM30 motor)

Searching through the forum has uncovered a warning against using multi grade oil in the gearbox.

Asking for this spec at all local chandlers has produced at best a vain hunt through catalogues.

Does anyone know how to get hold of Yanmar's specified oil?

A look in your yellow pages should come up with "Oil suppliers". They should be able to supply single grade oils to meet your spec. My local supplier supplies in 5lt as smallest size - anough for 10+ oil changes!

Local Motorbike shop should stock straight oils. Cassic bike bods use some.

Try garden machinery dealers - small 4-strokes used in lawnmowers etc often use 'straight' non-multi-grade oil. They also sell in smaller sizes - 0.5 to 1-ltr.

I bought some Rustilo from them about a year ago to help preserve some farm machinery which we have to leave out over the winter. Brilliant stuff. Spray on, and it turns to a wax. So far on one of the balers it has lasted over 8 months, and there's no rust at all. It comes in solvent and non-solvent base, so if you wanted to cover some stainless steel pulpit, or a bottlescrew, or something, it's great. (As used in the Blue Funnel Line to keep Her Maj's expensive toys free from the ferrite bug)

I got mine from chandlery on a Canal. It seems that old canal boats with old engines use these oils. It was a Millers oil I bought.

Use Morriss's Oil. Used exclusively by the Army, I believe, and generally regarded by bikers, particularly vintage bikers as the best.

Your car accessory shop will get it in.
