Source of O-Rings

I fixed a defective "O" ring on a motorcycle generator housing by finding a fuel filter "O" ring of the required size, but overlong. I guessed the right place to cut at an angle, cut with a stanley knife and then superglued the two ends.

The only dealer was 200 KMS away, and probably never had the required part anyway.

The manufactured "O" ring is still working, leak free for 16 years!

Loctite did an "O" ring kit years ago that had rolls of sized stock, a little jig for cutting and a tube of glue. I just plagarised their idea.

A few years ago I bought 3 boxes on eBay for little money. 2 metric and 1imperial. Two boxes were from RS. They are nitrile. I never thought about keeping some on the boat.

If anybody wants a few PM me. My kids will inherit them otherwise and they don't know what they are.

Well I bought a box of 240 (?) 'O' rings from a reputable supplier on Amazon.

I was wanting to buy a lip seal for the top of my rudder stock. I've got a nitrile(?) one (but anyhow it was what was recommended by the bearing supplier) but I had trouble getting one with a ss spring. Can you buy lip seals with ss springs? Actually it is 12 months ago since I was working on that so details are a bit hazy but I know I was dealing with a large UK supplier of bearings and seals. The Rudder shaft is 2 in. and the outside diam. of the lip seal is 3 in.

In the end I decided as it was a seal above the water line and if it did fail I would get warning I accepted a non ss spring seal
I get lip seals from my local bearing shop - S/s springs available, usually available the next day.

I was dealing with a bearing/seal supplier (manufacturer?) in the UK who was selling on eBay. They had an enormous range and I was in touch with them about a year ago so details are a bit hazy. (I'm now madly painting underwater and topsides before the wet weather sets in). When I switch back to the steering system I will renew my efforts. I think my problem is that the diameter is 2 in. which is fairly large and possibly limits my choice. Thanks
PS I think I bought a SKF seal (It's in a carrier I can't see the brand) so I was probably dealing with Simply Bearings UK.
