Cabling up my ST60+ everything was fine except for the sounder. Even the fishfinder seemed to work. So what, you might ask, but the boat is out of the water.

The sounder showed - - - even though the instrument menu seemed ok.

Continuity check on the cable showed open circuit.

Subjected problem to Raymarine via website;- no response.

Contacted MES who supplied the kit. Suggested telephone Raymarine.

"Is the transducer in the water?" No. "That is the problem, will show zero in air".

The engineer explained that the open circuit was due to the high impedance of the crystal which is all that exists in the transducer;- no electronics.

Might be useful to note for others in the future?

If you very lightly touch the transducer face with a finger-tip you will feel the transducer "click".
Alternatively, if you are a bit of a contortionist, an ear close to the transducer reveals the click.
This provides some sort of a check out of the water.
