I'd appreciate some guidance, please.

When Play d'eau was commissioned in 2003, we installed a Bose Lifestyle 20 system in the saloon (http://worldwide.bose.com/productsupport/en_us/web/ls20/page.html) which has served really well.

We run the TV through it and the sound is excellent. Using it for CDs is a pain since it requires a pre-loaded multi-cassette which you have to cycle through to find the one you want. The tuner has never really performed even with an external aerial. Hence, the desire to change. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

I would definitely invest in a NAS. You can now get mobile wireliess ones that work off their own battery. Then you just need a system that can stream.

Depending on your pockets you could go for something like a Sonos which you can use with separate built-in speakers and their own all in one speakers, or go high-end with things like Cyrus/Naim/Meridian to drive your own speakers.

we have a sonos system,
onboard is a Ipad with all our favourite music loaded in its memory.
when in the marina where we have good wifi, or in Croatia (simcard with unlimited data) we choose internet radio, Belgium Chanels.
our kids and their freinds can play their own music from their I-phones on the sonos system, in the selected zones.

we also use that Ipad for weather forecasts, and general internet acces

you can integrate existing speakers and or amplifiers in a sonos network.

every now and than we have a party onboard, swmbo is DJ'ing from the ipad through the sonos system in the cockpit or FB

Piers - how about this idea.

Do you have a tablets and phones about with your music on.
Most people that come onto our boat have their own music these days on their mobile devices (iPads and Androids etc)

What about a simple system that you connect into your Bose system (which is, in fact, just like our Bose Unit on our boat) that will play music from your (or your friends) tablet/phone over WiFi.
I'm sure people would also say over Bluetooth but there's a better option over WiFi.

I use devices that are very similar to these - three in fact.

(the actual device I use is called a DigiFunk but the particular model that I use seems not to be available at the moment)

I have connected each one to a separate zone (Saloon Zone - Cockpit Zone and Flybridge Zone)
In the Saloon the "Neet" (DigiFunk in my case) connects to an audio input on the Bose sound system.

The simple way to connect to them is to select the WiFi access point that each one creates.
If you use iPad/iPhone, you can then play to it using Apple's Air Play - sound is perfect.

Now to my point where the WiFi is better than (say) Bluetooth.
These devices can also connect to the ships WiFi Lan - remember that 4G router from a previous thread? - these "Neet" devices can connect to that (wirelessly)
You then connect your smart phone/tablet to the ships Wireless LAN and play music using "Air Play" to whatever Zone you want.

If you are an Android person (like me and hate Apple) there is an Android App that will play music to these "Neet" devices - all the zones simultaneously if required.

The great thing about this system is that you can have music throughout the boat in zones and not have to run wires everywhere.

Just ask if you need more info - works great for me and I also helped SammyB (on this forum) to install a similar system - I think they are very pleased with it.

For 24 quid - it is well worth a "punt" - but actually, I think you will be extremely impressed.

For further reading on my thoughts - here is a link to a thread I posted a few years ago.

I'd recommend moving away from all of the above, with the exception of the Bluetooth adaptor for for your current set up. A subscription to Apple Music is all you need; you'll find all life there and even if you still have lousy data deals on the CI's all the content can be downloaded and used offline....

Give it a try for a month, (free trial), and see if it works for you before you go and install a solution thats out of date within a year.

If you like it then you can upgrade the hardware based on the best solution for you.
