To avoid false alarms I take the exact position that I dropped the anchor at (not the position that the boat is in after the anchor has been set), then set the alarm to go off from that point, with the radius being the length of the scope that I have out minus the least depth of water that I will be in at low water. That way you can be sure that if the alarm goes off you have definitely dragged.
 
It depends where you are but a distance which allows the boat to swing right round on a tide change. 20 metres sounds rather low. As has already been said your best bet is to arrive earlier in the day and prove your anchor. Use the time to set an optimum anchor watch distance on the chart plotter as well.

When you get it right it's a great feeling, a bit like your first channel crossing. You also save a fortune!

Ever heard of cricket? Big controversy here at the moment.

As to anchoring, I have only ever had one night at anchor. Boat never moved but he hoolie blowing outside kept me well awake.

I sleep like a baby on a mooring or alongside.

From the second night onwards at anchor are the most restful, you seem to have more faith in the ground tackle, although the whipping motion of a light displacement boat on the hook during a big blow takes a bit of getting used to.

Must seem like a strange game to Americans, sometimes referred to as 'aerial ping-pong', but very similar to Gaelic (Irish) football.

No interest to me though Bernie, there aren't enough hours in the day to be concerned with anything much more than boats. :)

I've been a fan of Australian rules football for 30+ years. No pads, no time outs, no substitutes and full contact. I makes American footballers look like sissies. Next best is Rugby. I don't get to see it much and as such I am not much of a sports fan. But the Auzzie game? Those are some tough men.

I only saw one cricket match when I was in Hong Kong during the late 60's. I must have been only two or three year of age. ..... in my dreams. Never quite figured that game out. It seemed that since everyone wore white clothing it wasn't going to be a contact sport. I may have been considered a knuckle dragger back then and didn't appreciate the gentile side of the sport. Perhaps I should give it another look see. Maybe next year around May or June.

What is the controversy? How to get grass stains out of the white pants?

The cricket controversy is the Pakistan team has been taking bribes to throw the game, or alter the results. I don't think its the first time the bookmakers have singled out a few players.

The Aussie rules can be a hard game, some call it 'foot-brawl'.
