Sound Proofing boat engine compartment.

Your cheap foam was probably closed cell foam. If in doubt about the provenance of any soundproofing you acquire, see if it soaks up water.
Acoustic foam will always soak up water.

It's why you need a foil face near the engine because it soaks up diesel and oil too, so could become a very good candle even though the foam itself should be fire rated.

It's not necessarily good acoustic foam if it does absorb liquid, but making sure it does will eliminate the most useless thing you can fit ie closed cell foam.

You can buy new boats and new generators with impressive looking "soundproofing" that is NOT acoustic foam. Best ripped out and used for packing the next thing you sell on ebay. Using your duct tape:)

The new sound proofing sheets are from vetus do you think they are hoodwinking us? Not sure of your point about the new sheets, in your opinion are they good or bad?
My little bukh doesn't leak any fluids at all no oil nothing, a littly beauty and now the sound proofing sheets I don't know it's running it's so quiet. I returned to the boat after a run on engine to pick my wife up from ashore to be told she thinks the engine is still running. Good or what?

just fitting the asap stuff - it's made a big difference -went for the 20mm - needed access around the new beta which relaced a bukh (AS ABOVE!)
never thought about weghing the stern down but i suppose it will help a little
not too sure what to do about the new required water line on our sadler 29-any ideas ? it's sitting higher and has been epoxied a number of yrs ago

I thought lead was banned in virtually everything now? The substitute seems to be a high density plastic.

Halyard produce graphs of attenuation. But there seem to be no others with which to compare them.

Mass Loaded Vinyl replaces lead. If you google that you will get heaps of links to suppliers in China etc that supply all the well known sound proofing companies. Lots of money to be made in the sound proofing industry.

Ours (except visbrasorb) all use real lead. No it's not banned, I guess plastic is cheaper (but don't know)

I hope to have graphs soon, too.

sorry if I was unclear Robert I was joking about the stuff you ripped out.

I haven't tested the vetus stuff but I've not bought anything bad from them. I'd be staggered if the vetus stuff wasn't excellent quality proper acoustic foam.
