Whoops, could have phrased that better - sorry to hear you had to get the piles today!

I should have worked it out that with everyone on their dinghies for round the island race, no yachts were leaving their moorings today. I was going to suggest you pick up my mooring although at the top of Salcott its a bit far away for what you wanted but the radio got all busy round the back of the island and by the time it cleared I heard you call up for the Club launch for a pick up from the Piles. Actually they are not that bad although universally loathed.

Hope you had a good lunch although it looked like the front had been mayhem during the day and if I read the signs right, the launchmen had some serious loss of humour moments during the day.

Ah yes the piles. Well the graunch marks have been rubbed on the side of the boat to eradictae the evidence:o:o Fortunately we had friends with us and even then it took three goes - blimey I would not like to do that on a regular basis (or even again) - there's quite a current through there that is not quite in line with the piles.

Anyway we walked into the Company Shed duly armed with bread and booze and got the last free table:cool::cool: Excellent repast, nice whizz back to Bradwell on the jib. Perfect timing all round except for Mersea week. Brill.

How often does the launch operate? Must do WMYC for lunch before long.

Hope you had a good day Roger - the calm of early on soon become a strong classic SE onshore and I expect the 49ers had a blast.

Glad you had a good meal. The launch runs daily in the season between 8.30am and 5.30pm. On a normal day, it stops between 1pm and 2pm for lunch which is fine to come ashore and do lunch. Certain times we have two launches on - like summer week-ends when it runs to 6.30pm. See here for the full schedule

Lunch is quite reasonable with Eddy our current chef and out of Mersea Week there should be no problem with a close-by mooring for lunch. Overnighting at the far end of Salcott where I am can be really nice and enough water to float.

A few years ago there was some discussion about us putting some pontoons Brightlingsea style on our Piles but the assessment seemed to be that the current and potential wave action on grim days meant a short life cycle and the idea never got going.

Good fun today although it nearly went wrong as I got out on the first launch at 7am (special service today for the members involved in safety boats) only to find the diver just starting to scrub TG's bottom. Once he was down there, we just had to wait although we were supposed to be zooming off to get round the back of the island. Still once we got going we had a clean bottom and made good progress round. A good ten or so went anti clockwise round the island and with the early light winds didn't make it to the Strood before the water left it; really sad to get halfway round into the back fo Pyfleet and then having to retrace your steps, now against a foul tide. Pretty lumpy off Mersea Stone on the ebb. But a pleasure uneventful day drinking tea and soup at the top of a pretty creek. Not a bad way to spend the day. 20.59nm there and back.

Now that's a memory question which is a bit unfair. I guess as we have only had one Eddy, the answer must be 'yes'. I guess this is his second Mersea Week. His menu doesn't get as extensive as Julian's used to do but that's as much about a change in policy and demographics rather than choice. But there is usually a nice Specials board.

I'm afraid Judy and I are getting quite lazy and pop down for lunch and a bottle of vino avant une power nap on a rubbish day.

Piles in West Mersea

I gave up trying to get in to West Mersea yesterday when it was clear that there were no empty moorings. I had a couple of inexperienced crew who were out for their first sail, so I did not take on the pile moorings which looked rather full anyway.

But what a great day for a sail ... and we saw two seals and the first harbour dolphin that I've seen in the Blackwater for two years. I'm not sure my two Aussie friends were convinced when I said it was always like that!

Once again the Green Man became a good destination for Adnams and food.

Yes, Mersea Week is kinda full for a first visit. This year seems particularly busy. I'll be glad when it goes back to being sleepyville but I mustn't begrudge anyone their fun. Not so pleasant today! Fair weight in that wind at times.
