Now I know what to do with my props if I've bashed them. Just send away to be welded up, straightened out, or rather bent into shape again.
But my props are getting a bit old and worn. My man in Plymouth says we will get yet another year out of them, but there getting a bit pitted and raggie around the edges.
Now can they be metal sprayed, or other, back to nearly like new. Or is the metal goosed and getting no good, so nothing much good to stick good metal to. There on a P35 alloy I think, but haven't seen them for a long time.
So Stop muching me about and give me a phone number!!

They can be rebuilt, even if all you have is the boss! But seriously, they can weld new blades on and fair them up, polish and balance them these days. It wont be cheap if the are really goosed, but cheaper than new ones! Steel developements, I think is one place, theres a place in devon aswell and just about every boatie place around.

So what's the question Haydn? The man says they'll last another year, but you're suffering from a severe case of overful wallet syndrome and desperately looking for a reason to buy new? So how about buying different size ones? Or one's with more or less blades or some of those new fangled Sabden Treacle coated ones, or the Soltron laminar flow ones? Then you can spend all summer agonising over whether the new ones are as good as the old and whether you should change back or not and if so do you have the boat lifted out to do it or just throw Longjohn over the side with a spanner.

My money's on you getting a new set 'cos if you didn't really want to, you wouldn't have asked us all to tell you to, now would you?

Then get the old ones revamped as spares.

Re: No! No! No!

I was thinking that if they could be done up for say £100 each and that gives me 2 or 3 knots more wizzy speed. Then use less fuel, so save money. And yes believe it or not I had already thought of wizzing LJS over the side to change them.
It's not so much a question of can I do it. I Know I can. Must admit its a good few years since I last bashed a pair so forgoten who mended. But its more of a cost effective line that I'm after.
Anyway stop muching me about and give me a phone number!

Pardon me Colic!!

And you have the nerve to talk of me being thrown over the side. At least when I go over it's always pre-planned and with suitable equipment being worn!! <G>

Alloy?

Haydn, they're almost certain to be phosphor bronze not alloy. There's a chap in Brixham who does repairs very quickly and for reasonable, will get a phone no if you're interested.

BTW changing props underwater is almost impossible, nearly always need lots of heat to free them from the shaft. Maybe different if they've only just been put on, but still too many things to drop and never see again, much easier out of the water.

Re: No! No! No!

What's all this about mulching? You been at the begonias again down in your allotment?

If you REALLY do want to get them refurbed, best people in the business are Steel Developments in West London and their website, not surprisingly is www.steeldevelopments.com.

Did my duoprops (several times 'cos I keep dinging them) for I think £30 each or they'll sell you new ones if beyond repair at good prices. Three day turnround is genuine. Actually did mine in August in two days. Pretty good eh? Give em a try. Oh and unlike Dom and that Notslut stuff I really don't get a kickback from them.

Re: Alloy?

Bloody hell, I know you've gorn to the pub to avoid reading my reply but here goes anyway!!

As any idiot with only quarter of a brain knows, changing a prop on an outdrive is effing simple - you managed it!! <BG>

There we go, bait swallowed hook line and sinker, I'm nothing if not predictable!

Re: Alloy?

Ah but at least I don't have to fall in to change my props and I don't need an underwater blowlamp. Just use the right tool and the job's done.

On shaft drive how difficult can it be? Undo one nut. Doh that's tricky? If it's too tight for a wimp, just wedge the spanner in and spin the whisks in reverse. Job done.

At least on Duoprops we've got TWO nuts, and they're different sizes too.

As H says, you're obviously over the hill and past it and not up to the job. Better get a youngster like Tomo to do it for you H. Or his dog.

Proper boat!

Just you wait till you get a proper boat with proper shafts and then you can pronounce on removing props!

One time when I didn't have a blow torch I hired a puller and wound it up, nothoing happened so had a cuppa, suddenly prop shot off, flew about 10' !!

Undoing the nut's the easy bit, props seem to have a way of welding themselves to the shaft, seems to happen even if they've been liberally coated with grease when put on.

Pleased to hear you've got two nuts, bet they were reduced in size when you fell in last week!!!

Wow! Doesn't John get annoyed quick! But I tend to agree with him, trying to manouver props tools and self under boat with tank and everyhting is a bit tricky!

Re: Thanks Kids.

But you were all to slow as usual. Boats going back in on Tuesday so not much time to wiz them up to London and back for Monday. I'll speak to London iron works, see what they say. LJS. Get some practice in will you!! Colins idea of you pulling on the props while me and Tomo sit up top with the beer and spining props back and forward seems an exelent sugestion. <G>

Re: steel developments

Strongly recommend them, have used them loads of times. They do mail order, or you can visit them in Wimbledon (where strangely you find it's a residential house with a big prop shed at the bottom of the garden)
