Sorry that this is "NB" but....

Re: Parish councils

Why don't you do something positive about it and stand for your local council? You obviously know all the answers.

"When I get old and don't have to go to work any more I'll stick myself up for election, but not being able to do so now, I won't stoop to cretinous criticism of people wo are doing a job that I could volunteer for, but choose not to (whatever the excuse).'

and all the others who said much the same - Hear Hear

If you don't like it then get in there and work on changing it. Parish Councils (in particular) are always looking for people to stand ... And it's hardly a full time commitment.

Brian,

Are you sure that it's the Parish Council which has been causing you all this grief? Parish Councils don't have the power to do that much with planning permission; they only act in an advisory role.

Parish Councils also have no powers to implement Traffic Calming schemes.

It's the District councils(Planning) and County councils (Traffic Calming) which have the final say in these matters. It sounds as if your wrath is being mis-directed.

Parish councils have very little power full stop. They are simply a talking shop for those too inadequate to really make a difference. Still, it keeps them of the streets I suppose.

Re: Sorry that this is \"NB\" but....

It really doesnt matter who issues the ASBOS - the kids just chalk them up as staus symbols, and carry on laughing to the next bit of vandalism etc.

Perhaps the suggestion that PCs should issue them reflects the fact that like PCs, ASBOS have no real power to stop the problem or to change anything.

Yet another Blairite excuse for doing nothing.

Re: Sorry that this is \"NB\" but....

Where is this Utopian Council, in your head or does it really exist?

District, certainly.....

Except that I give my spare time to RNLI at the moment.

County, well that requires serious time input and I'm not so sure they have a future.

BUT

Parish Councils?

Waste of time and resources. Windbags on their soapboxes trying to get themselves extra powers (or just assuming them)

Allotments and footpaths, that's their brief but they will keep setting up "Planning Committees" when they have no such function. Ours has a "Council Chamber" would you believe. If that isn't self-egrandisment, I don't know what is. They tried to nobble a local postmaster for distributing district council election material but just succeeded in looking even more foolish.

They have a real job in getting anyone to stand so end up co-opting new members. I repeat, why do we need them?

Re: District, certainly.....

Democaracy, that's why. They may not be ideal, but they are an attempt at giving some form of local demoracy/representation. If you don't like them, that's up to you. However, you are taking the time to moan about them, so why don't you take the time to do something constructive and propose a better system?

Or are you just being a wind bag? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
