Sorry but Seatalk AGAIN!!

I know, another Seatalk post. I'm sorry. Tried doing a search but not come up with much to help me...

Breif description of system: ST50 depth and speed with a ST7000 Autohelm pilot, with repeaters on fly bridge. Depth seems to work ok, but not speed. Auto pilot shows "no link" error message.
I guess it's just a wiring fault somewhere in the seatalk network....there's a couple of chocolate blocks in the network, linking the various seatalk cables.
I want to re-wire the network, which will hopefully make it all come back to life, but want to do it all properly with w/proof connectors etc.
I'm sure I read a post somewhere stating the seatalk round type plugs were available from Maplins......
Any one know the p/n for the plugs?

Try to disconnect red Seatalk wire (if it is connected ) in Autopilot - if it have separate power connection. I have a lot of troubles because I had 2 power cables as input in my pilot. Everything was working fine and in the moment some problems as you have.
Regarding beer- it is too far to send me , so please solve this problem by yourself. It will be more easy than solve devils in your Seatalk network! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Hi, is the st50 a combine unit for depth and speed, or two seperate units, if combined, its not seatalk, if not combined, unlug the depth and plug the speed to the depth unit seatalk cable. ?
what happens then ?

Most ST buses are powered from the autopilot if present, so caution on disconnecting the red wire (12V seatalk supply) from the autopilot st output.
try the above test first
also, is the speed repeated to the repeater on the flybridge ?
 
Sorry I don't know the Maplin pt no for the older seatalk connectors. I'm guessing that's the reason they changed to an arc-shaped three pin type - so you can't get them at a non-marine price!
Does anyone know if the current (ST60+) type is available on the open market?

I've not tried un-plugging and re-connecting yet as I've got to take half the boat apart to get to the back of the display's. I'm getting ready for the job by getting some suitable wire/connectors together before starting.
As the seatalk wiring is currently a bit of a mess, the plan is to start from the pilot computer checking the connections and replacing/re-making where needed. Hopefully by doing this will remove the problem, along with making the whole instalation much nicer.

Maplin sell small female spade connectors that will fit seatalk - but you obviously don't get the convenience of the three-in-one connector.

As I recall the seatalk male pins are a little fatter than normal spade connectors so you need to prise open the Maplin connectors a little bit. Push a small screwdriver into the female connector (and not into your thumb).
 
I suggest you buy some new seatalk cables off eBay. You'll then have the proper connectors on the ends and you can use chocolate blocks to connect the two lengths. It's then easy to route the cables. This is the approach I have seen taken by Raymarine fitters. Of course some of the units don't use the 'seatalk' type connector and this makes it even easier. i.e. The course computers have a terminal strip.

i considered this, but most of the ebay cables seem to be for the later "flat" connection.
I'll probably be able to use the existing cables, but just wanted the option just in case....
 
Ah sorry. I was thinking of the later 'arched' seatalk connectors. On the ST50's aren't the connectors on the end of fly leads coming out of the units? In which case I would just cut off and use chocolate blocks where necessary.

No worried thanks for trying.
Whilst installing a new chart plotter earlier in the season, i had a fiddle....I'm sure there were plugs into the back of the units rather than leads??? Don't really want to use choccy blocks...never liked them!! Although seems inevitable for the link between upstairs and downstairs!!!
someone somewhere must know if the 3 pin plugs are available....pleeeease. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Depth works fine, but to be honest if i'm not confident I've got safe water under me I won't be travelling at planing speed.
