This is a funny one, but last weekend we were sailing all weekend, when I finished on Sunday, my eyes were very red and weeping, conjunctivitis it turned out. I wear contact lenses and the wind obviously dried them out too much. This hasn't happened before to this extent, but I wondered if anyone has suffered from this. I'm going to invest in some good sunglasses to try and prevent this in future, any ideas?

Apart from Optrex, I keep a small bottle of Systane on board. It's a sort of artificial tear film, and works a treat, dunno how though.

Not being a contact lens wearer I can't say that I have, but the yotty environment can be pretty hard on the eyes anyway. A good pair of wrap around shades are essential, especially with reflected light from the water. Salt spray can make life uncomfortable too.

I have shades for sunny days and some wrap around safety specs for night time.

Try the Rolls Royce of sunnies, 'Maui Jim'. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif See them here at :

They do the best polarised, perscription lens, and on some cool frames. Be warned not cheap !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hey!

I am exactly the same, i wear contacts as much as possible on board as i hate it when my glasses get rained on; I have found that the best thing to do is to take them out in the eveings when alongside and give your eyes a rest, the other thing that i do is to have some saline solution handy and if i feel the lenses getting dry i just put some drops in.

Hope that helps

Matt

remember to blink a lot more often, this will help to keep the eye moist.

if you have not drunk enough liquid during the day, you will naturally de-hydrate, and this will also have an impact on how moist the eyes remain.

Check out Gill...

I've been using Gill Classic sunglasses for a couple of years now. They're a good wrapround design to keep wind out of the eyes, they're also very lightweight, extremely comfortable to wear, have Polarised lenses, and they float! Only £30 inc P&P from Wiggle.

Ahem, I don't know how old you are or how long you have been wearing contact lenses. I found after 20 years of trouble free wearing that I had to give up wearing them as I started to get your symptoms on a regluar basis. Not uncommon apparently. Still keep CLs on board as back up for loss of specs but don't wear them on a regular basis any more.

Several of the crew had sore eyes as well, I'm the only CL wearer though. Happy to wear glasses in every day life, just like to wear the CL's for sailing and outdoor stuff, make a huge difference to me. Would anyone (or has anyone), had the laser surgery. I don't think I would have the nerve!

If you or friends travel to the States go to a Walmart and get some polarised fishing glasses.
They only cost about $9 a pair and are ideal for the boat. They come in various styles and are very heavily tinted and polarised, ideal for sunny days on the water and when they get dropped overboard or sat on - at about a £5 its no great loss. I always get a few pairs when I am over there.
