What sort of work are you lookig at? We spent last winter laid up there and as a boatyard found it to be very good. There were a number of people we spoke to who were having work done by the yard. The levels of skill and costs were not complained about but like most yards the work will go quicker if you are there to keep nudging them along otherwise they tend to leave everything to the last minute.
They allow you to do as much work yourself as you wish and Hugo, the boss is a very pleasant chap. Make sure you agree a price with him in advance and I don't think you will be too disappointed.
Super boat yard, very professional. Though they once had a marine electronics guy who caused us to recieve a 1000 Euro bill for work done even though it was acknowledged that the fault was not cured. I did get a nice letter from Hugo the boss suggesting I take it up with the manufacturers.
Had a stern arch constructed and solar panels fitted early this year.
Job was very professionally carried out, more or less on time and cost was exactly as per written quotation.
Although I did not have any alternative quotes with which to compare, I sense that they are not cheap.
I have used them a number of times over the years when in the area. Their work for me has been very good quality. The only reservation that I would have is for electronics. Standard electrical work is fine but the complex electronics is a bit variable. There are alternatives in Lagos for electronics. Their mechanical engineering, GRP, painting and ss work is first class. The only other negative is that their sense of urgency is more "Latin" than "Anglo Saxon" but if you get a firm date from them then they stick to it - the trick is to get a firm date. Also, although the two bosses, Hugo and Pedro speak fluent English ( and other European languages) as do some of the other staff, you neeed to put everything in writing using sensible language and make certain that it is understood. The last potential problem is that it is well nigh impossible to get them to reply to emails, letters, faxes or phonecalls. Remonstrating face to face about non communications brings a smile, a shrug and "Oops - sorry". Prices are about two thirds that for Southern England yards when you take the total bill into account.(NB the word total) Beware imported equipment prices for items which which you get them to fit for you. The imported item price can be very expensive and much more than the discount chandlers in England and France. They are happy to let you supply kit for them to fit. Overall, other yards along the Algarve are cheaper and some are even more expensive but my choice in the area would be Sopromar every time. Fair winds.
Another fan. Poss not the cheapest but very professional. You can liveaboard while on the hard as well. Also fantastic sardines in the little eateries next to the fishing harbour.
They fitted a set of Simpson davits for me in 2005 and made a real mess of it. Eventually had to have them removed and refitted with new brackets in Greece. They were not cheap either.
