Why has a pop singer called Sophie Ellis-Bextor been asked to open SIBS? Apparently her only nautical connection is that her mum used to work on Blue Peter!! This news comes in the week that 17 year old Mike Perham claimed the title of the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe - it's hard to think of a less appropriate candidate and a more obviously overlooked one! And I know the SIBS organisers couldn't have risked Perham not finishing in time but surely it's not too late to make a switch now - I'm sure Sophie would understand...

SIBS is a Boat Show, buit it depends for a lot of its revenue on getting non-sailors to treat it as a family day out, particularly at the weekends.

Although Mike Perham was on the local news last night (not sure about the national news) his name is familiar only to a few people, whereas Sophie Ellis-Bextor is known to hundreds of thousands.

If you were the SIBS PR people, who would you chose if you wanted to get maximum media exposure for the opening?

Don't get me wrong, I really like Sophie Ellis-Bextor - I nearly bought a house from her Dad 20 years ago so we obviously have strong family connections...I just think SIBS missed an opportunity. Perhaps they should also invite Mike Perham to team up with Sophie as a special surprise guest - Beauty meets the Boy Wonder.
