Something I won\'t do again

More of the fabulous Ostend weekend elsewhere but....

We needed to get back to Bradwell on a tide so opted for leaving Ostend at 0900 with a return estimated at at 0200. In the event we left as planned and after I switched the engine off at Bradwell I looked at my watch and it was EXACTLY 0200 /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

BUT......

We opted to come down the East Swin from Longsand Head in a building Northeasterly (unlike the prudent Mr Full Circle). It was a huge surfing safari and it was a very very dark night. By the time we got to the Swin Spitway it was 1130 (one hour after low water) with 27 knots and a fair sea running. Those lights are spooky. Well we turned 90degrees across wind and tide, water all over the boat, and plugged at the Spitway - down to a metre /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Coastguard gave a warning about the prolific use of the F word heard off the East coast /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) and we were through /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This was not clever but a poor choice of route in the conditions and plain scary - oh for The Wallet!

After that it just got windy! Off the Colne with 32 knots over the deck from behind us and we were doing 6 knots - so that's a force never-before-and-no-thanks. Going into Bradwell is very very very dark on a cloudy night even when you know it and have a big torch.

0200 - beers opened - collapse was imminent.

Having survived an epic trip all the way from Ipswich to Walton on Saturday, I'm full of admiration for everyone who ventured out beyond Nanny's reach.

Likewise, having been pinned into the berth in Titchmarsh all weekend. Nice walk around Beaumont and Landemere on Saturday though.

Re: Something I won\'t do again

Looks like it was the right option to come back from Ramsgate to Ipswich yesterday via the Black Deep and the Harwich shipping channel then! Very bumpy and windy, but amazingly sunshine most of the way! We had a great weekend apart from the French blockade scuppering our plans to go to Calais. Saturday was a scorching day sitting sipping beers in t-shirts on the Ramsgate water front. And the sail back yesterday was great fun! Beer and brandy rounded off the weekend perfectly on arrival to Ipswich at 19:30. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Hee hee Roger,

I did wonder about the wisdom of your plan!

Just past Long Sand Head we managed to hit 9.5kts under 3rd reefed main and 2nd reefed genny before we started the surf down a wave! I don't know what the final speed was, as I daredn't look down!

It was one hell of a roller coaster ride back..... its not fun sailing in the dark in a F7 building to and gusting F8 with such a huge sea running, but like everyone, I arrived safely, and with the benefit of hindsight, realised that the boat was completely happy with the whole trip.... the old adage, "the boat will carry on well past the capabilities of the crew" remains intact!

One moment of amusement for us was Mrs Full Circle radioing us up just as they passed Languard Cardinal with a very formal call, all procedure correct, and then closing it off with a request for a "very large whisky"

A big well done to everyone who made it back safely.... it was extremely testing, and has in my eyes proved the excellent seamanship skills that I new you all had!

Re: Something I won\'t do again

Great trip back in Beyond Reason too, big seas and big speed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Great weekend, really good, great sailing, excellent company and it looks like we may have all returned in one piece. Result.

Or ......... as we summarised aboard the good ship Beyond Reason ...........

Left Harwich, turned right a bit, got to Ostend, drank beer, great time, nuff said.

Re: Something I won\'t do again

Thanks Neil - it was nice to have you in view for most of the trip (I was surprised we kept pace with a big boy /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif). A new benchmark has been set - in future I will say "only a F7........" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Something I won\'t do again

As others have already said Roger, it's just good to see everyone returning safely, this was taken before it really started to pick up, after which the camera that had been snapping away happily for so long, was confined to the aft port cabin on the good ship Morgana

Re: Something I won\'t do again

I think you are all very brave. I lay in bed that night listening to the wind and thinking what a good place bed was!

Well done to all of you.

Re: Something I won\'t do again

Well done to all - looking at the driving rain & wind over the weekend (from the safety of home) I would not have fancied the North Sea at all...

Congrats & glad you all had a good time.
