I've been hiding in the shadows until now, absorbing as much boaty information as I possibly could to achieve a competent knowledge level that would facilitate the purchase my first boat. I've had an offer on a boat accepted and the river trial is next week.
This is just a quick note of thanks to those who posed the relevant questions that I was interested in and those who answered them. Thanks too, for a whole range of tips that I've managed to pick up since June when I first found this forum.
That's it. I don't have any questions to put to the panel but I'm sure it won't always be that way.

Hi! Welcome to the madhouse, and great that your posting after watching on for so long.

One quick question. Two actually - what boat have you offered on?

Your username suggests sea boating, though you mention river trial. Are you going to be doing purely river boating? If you plan on spending time at sea, you should really arrange a sea trial (sorry if that's a bit obvious, if you've been reading advice for ages)

I would like to echo everything said by Seafarer. I too have been lurking and learning for a long time now and my 'new' boat (Falcon 23SPC) is being delivered to it's winter storage next week.

Can't wait for the Spring when I will be taking her to Teignmouth!

Thanks everyone.

Wow!

Welcome!

Lurkers popping out all over the place - brilliant!

How did you choose your boat, and what did you learn here that influenced you?

<hr width=100% size=1>

I chose the Falcon after reading a report in MBM about two years ago!

I particularly liked the space/layout/accomodation and the favourable comments made by the owners in the article. I think it is a great looking boat and a manageable size for someone who has only before hired on the Broads/Caledonian Canal.

Like Seafarer, I have picked up tons of useful info on the forum and had the stupid questions asked by someone else, saving a great deal of embarrassment!

Hopefully you'll have learnt by now that there is no such thing as an embarrassing question.

The regulars take the piss out of each other, but take questions from newcomers quite seriously for the first post or two - after which you are a regular and fair game ;) Even the people who have been here for years ask questions about situations which are new to them. Just look at the posts on things like finance and VAT which confuse everyone

We all started from scratch at some time, so please ask questions. It gets a bit dull if it's the same few people talking to each other all the time while everyone else just watches

No problem, all comments are welcome. The Medway, Thames (tidal) and its estuary as a starting point. The boat has twin diesel engines, 105 hp, I'll post the detail as soon as we get into the home straight of purchasing.
As for influences, there were a number of turning points not least the petrol/diesel debate which seemed to make a hot summer even warmer on the forum. Then there was the stern gear and bellows comments. I think those were the main ones.

Please do not take Brendan too seriously. His care worker asked if we would accomodate him as its good therapy for his particular affliction. You'll find he won't be too much of a problem as the hospital only allow him to use the computer in the evening as it s cheap call rate time.

So your down on the Medawy. Keep a look out for Memory Maker. Helmed by a forum sage and all round mountain of knowledge. Oh. A hearty welcom to the forum. Basically enjoy.

Welcome. That's good news re. Teignmouth. I've often gone past the Teign because the Pilot says beware of the entry, local knowledge required etc etc. I'll summon you to guide me in and show me the sights next year.
