Re: Some Volvo\'s have anodes some don\'t why??

Easy and logical answer is it depends on the mix of metals in the engine.
Seems a bit strange to me that this can't be controlled better at the design stage.

Don't know if this is the full explanation but the 30 and 40 series were designed from the outset as marine diesels. Other than several of the Yanmar ranges this is unusual. The 60 series came from truck/commercial, in common with many marine engines from all over the place.

Volvo found that the anodes created more problems than they solved, the pencil anode in the oil cooler used to break off and block the cooling tubes. So all the new engines in the Kad series and larger 60's and 70's have no anodes and don't seem to be any the worse for it.

Many years ago on a Volvo-Penta engine maintenance course I was told that it depended on whether the raw water cooling intakes were connected to the engine via metal pipes, or 'insulated' by rubber hose. However, I doubt whether this rule is rigorously applied because many engines are specified for both sterndrive (typically pipes) and shaft drive configuration (typically hoses). Whatever, I agree that the anodes do more harm than good once they have corroded into little bits!
