Some photos from the weekend..

So you think it is safe to not look where you are going do you.

Boats do not drop out of the sky, and there aren’t many submarines in the Solent.
If the area ahead and around is clear, then looking sideways for a few seconds to take a photo isn’t an issue.
Ultimately, the skipper could see what was or was not around, and you don’t have that info.

Dennis, what do you think people might hit if they look sideways for 15 seconds or so? Just trying to understand your concern.

If I was going to hit something that close I would already have altered course, what was done here is no different to looking down to your plotter for a few seconds to change something which I’m sure all skippers do ?

Can’t see a market for a 22d world problem of head up displays - hang on a pair of side up too and an perplex rear reader along with a multi function wheel or voice command .
Alternatively it’s possible to wear a headset with a blink operating smart camera , so you just look at the “target “and make the correct facial gesture to take a pic .
Maybe a collision avoidance system like “ lane assist “ set to look ahead and sensitive enough for pots — hmmm .

Never mind all this n2K backbone linking malarkey, trying to get it all to talk to each other :)

Or just a Mk 1 eyeball and a bit of common sense :encouragement:

Joking aside as said we all peer about a bit .
If it’s a fast speed and dense area then I either slow down or ask for a 2nd pair of eyes a kinda officer of the watch or both .
You make a judgement..but SteveD,s pic looked safe enough to me .

Nice pics btw both of you .

Just to play devil's advocate, the only situation I can think of where I usually keep an eye forward constantly is in areas full of pots, which sometimes can only be spotted just a few seconds before hitting them.
Other than that, the difference between a boat and a car is so obvious that it's not even worth explaining...

Back to the more interesting main topic (how come that we manage to drift into colreg - sort of - so many debates...? :D), a very nice weekend indeed by the look of it, thanks for sharing it FF. I also like Hogs Back bitter, btw! :encouragement:

Pots was what I was thinking but IIRC correctly the Solent isn't littered with pots (there are so many pleasure boats they wouldn't last a day). As for other partially submerged debris, yes it's possible but you'd have to be extremely unlucky to hit something in the summer.

I did, oh dear, you sound upset. As to the latter point I think that's been well enough covered by everyone else above.

Boats do not usually drop out of the sky, and if they are about to, the down-draft from the Chinook is a good clue that remedial action is shortly to be required.
