Some Footage from The DJI Mini 2

Thanks for the vid , i quite fancy a drone but feel iwould vid the boat once then put it in the cupboard and not use again . So question do you use it much .

I have many and I use them a reasonable amount of time. I have some man math's I do about use. It is measured in rounds of drinks. This is my theory........... I recon a round of drinks costs £20-£25 these days and that lasts about say 30 mins if you are lucky..... I then divide the cost of an item by £25 so for the drone £550/£25 = 22 rounds of drinks or 11 hours of drinking.......... So if I get more than 11 hours of pleasure from the Mavic Mini 2 I am happy, any more is a bonus. Also use is a strange concept..... Just buying it and having it gives pleasure so is that use....... A person who hangs an expensive painting on the wall or worse keeps it in a dark locked room is that being used......... Does a thing have to be used to give pleasure........... I have already enjoyed this thread.... So should I add that in.

One thing I do know is never take the total cost of your boat or boats in a year and divide that by the number of times you use it...... That can destroy your joy. and is very bad maths.... Others are very good at doing that for you..... I call them the fun eaters...... Dont get me on the concept of 'need' that is another great source for the fun eaters.

So a more simple answer to your question is. The DJI Mini 2 is very small and compact and easily carried with you. I bought it on I think the 10th November and have already used it about 10 times and I am sure will use it a lot more. Will I use my other 12 or more drones much.... Some yes some no. But does that matter.... .

Or another way to look at it would you rather buy 22 rounds of drinks or have the Drone.............

Go on buy one you know it makes sense

I only have the old Mavic Mini but it gets much more use than the Mavic Pro I've got.
Mainly because the Mini is so easy to pop in a bag and take it away with you.

Over the last 20 years, I've always treated myself to new cameras just as we are about to go on holiday.
These days, I don't buy new cameras but over the last 4 years, it has been drones instead at about the same value.
So, my version of the man maths is that I haven't spent any more on the drones than I would have done on new cameras in the same period of time.
In fact, I'm about due for a new drone!!!

The great thing about a drone is that you can take photos of the boat instead of from the boat. I don't use our drone for making movies much, mostly I take still photos which I couldn't get any other way. I do this often enough to make the drone well worth having. Here's one of my favourites, on a buoy at Lundy island. No other way of getting that viewpoint.

I got one yesterday, been tanking down most of today so hopefully first flight tomorrow. Then all I need to do is to work out how to land it on a moving yacht!

With most of the DJI Drones (the Mavics especially) all you need to do is grab it quickly and flip it upside down.
It then shuts its motors off.
Do it too slowly though and it will fly away from you.

Well done. Set it up at home so that you can download any updates then although they are incredibly easy to fly take it to an open area for you first few flights to get used to how it all works

I’d seen that on a youtube vid last night and tried it today, worked well. Thanks

First flight today!
In comparison to the toy drones they are incredibly stable aren’t they. The video quality is amazing too. As my marina has now opened the doors I might try a shot in there tomorrow.

Yes one of the big issues is people understandably want to start with a cheap drone but they are simply not a patch on a DJI one and the cheaper one puts them off. Enjoy your new toy amd try not to get too tied up with the multitude of laws and regulations that some people will love to spout at you. Just be sensible and respectful and you should be ok

Well I tried KDEnlive and it is deffo not for me. Fist issue is finding the download site and not getting hoodwinked into downloading other stuff that is not KDEnlive. Then my Virus checker went mad at me for going to the mirror site but I eventually got it downloaded..... Then like 10 years ago I had to search for the exe file............... which I found.

Now to using it as is usual for this sort of stuff it is written without the end user in mind... Geeks know what they mean but not mere mortals, After about 30 mins I am none the wiser on how to use it.

Also the browser wont see my network folders for some reason so I put a DJI file in the local machine and it can see it is there but wont add it. or open it. Compatability issue I suspect but who knows.

I think I will stick to windows movie maker.

Thanks for the suggestion but I think this is only any good for people very, very, very, in tune with IT. Even the readme file was some sort of file type that my PC would not open.

I remember trying some other open source software once before and I now remember who I felt then... Rather frustrated.

Well by selecting all files (not supported files) i got the clip in but I am finding this so unintuitive it is driving me bonkers. I also find the font very bad on the eyes..... Don't want to seem ungrateful but it is not for me

Movie Maker was (is) a great editing suite for simple home movies. It lacks a lot of tools which more sophisticated editing suites offer but in the hands of an amateur those tools easily spoil a video instead of enhancing it. If the subject matter is interesting the last thing an audience wants is clever editing that distracts from the subject matter.

I recommend this site for investigating alternative software for all types of work: AlternativeTo - Crowdsourced software recommendations

And this short professional video is a great source of ideas on how to make drone videos interesting without fancy editing
EDIT (I have deleted the link to the full video , this link takes you to the main content, see posts #33 & #34 for the reason.

Thanks for this but it is quite interesting that I started to watch that video which I think is a video about how to make video and I found myself irritated by the bloke and his style right from the outset. So I clicked stop and wont be watching that any time soon.

I think film and video is so subjective to different people no one style fits all and people (including me) have become very impatient and just want to cut to the chase.

Movie maker is ok for me I think or indeed the DJI software. Some people will like what you make and others will not, Comments about adding music, not having music, it being too long or too short all makes no difference to be honest as no single opinion is correct.

I know what is true however is I was a little depressed this morning so thought I would try and cheer myself up looking into this area......... Guess what it has driven me lower into the hole :) I am off outside to do a little gardening in the greenhouse I think....

No ones fault except perhaps the weather, the dark and of course the current situation we are all living in

I agree with you. That's why I gave a link to skip the introduction! So many instructional videos faff around for ages before getting to the useful stuff.

Well done - you did the right thing. I am wondering about going off line for a week or maybe two. I think for those of us who might be susceptible to depression it's vital that we spend a good bit of time away from screens. I would love to be out on the boat but I'm in a minority of one at this time of year!

I know what you mean. We are now off to Alton Water for a little walk with the Dog. Too much screen stuff and indeed Forums is not always the best thing when you are a little low

No worry.
Each to his own.
I started my videos using Movie Maker but I soon wanted it to do something that it doesn't.
After a lot of research with the likes of Shotcut I then switched to Adobe's Premier after having a long go with Filmora (Wondershare)
I was also in the process of dumping Windows completely for other reasons so I wanted a multi platform video editor.
At the time, KDEnLive was very flaky but by the time I came round to it, they had improved it so much.
IMO, as a free video editor, it sits up there with the likes of Premier.
So, I'm sorry that it isn't for you but please keep it in mind - you may become more adventurous and want some of those "extra features" sometime.
Actually, as someone who has played with lots of editors, I think KDEnLive is quite intuitive for the features that it offers.

I took another one today with the Mini 2 and edited it in the DJI Fly software that is actually quite easy on the Tablet/Phone. I am not to tell you lot where it is apparently cos all you South Coast lot might invade us here as it is so nice :)..... ◄Whoops I just spotted it is in the title

Lovely video. We've been there in our previous boat, got right up to Snape for a few nights on the Maltings quay. Hoping to be back one day. The anchorage at Havergate is wonderful.
