We went for a walk yesterday and took the DJI Mini 2 for a little fly at my main boating location in Felixstowe. Here is a little video that demonstrates its capabilities and Zoom. This was taken at 1080p in very poor light but it is fine for me. This drone can do 4K at 30fps but I think 1080p is perfect because in my view the extra data size etc of 4k is not worth the benefit.

If you wish to discuss all the rules and regulations to do with Drones then might I respectively ask you to start your own thread as it is kind of depressing and this is not my intention her.

Thanks for putting that on here, a mini 2 kit is highest on my Xmas pressie list so it's good to see what it can do, this will be my 1st drone and everything I'm reading says it's a good starter, or might just be my "only" one if I like it and it can do everything I'm likely to need in a drone, which is probably the case. Just to ask... the picture sharpness appears to change for the better at about 16secs in, is that a drone camera thing with regards to light/aperture/zoom etc or was it engineered ,?, or is it my video player ?
 
looks good, very smooth too. I'd agree with your comments on 4K, 1080 is more than enough for home use / youtube. 4k only if you're doing professional work.
 
How the heck do you do that!! My only experience with drones is usually a short flight where it wobbles all over the place before crashing very damagingly into something solid whilst I desperately wiggle the sticks trying to avoid aforementioned crash!

What drone are you using?

The dji drones are foolproof, even a child can fly them with ease.

I’m looking at the Mini 2 myself and the blurb states ‘not suitable for children under 3’ ??? I think it will be good enough for me ?
 
The original Mini is currently well priced and on discount for Black Friday ( the Mini 2 is not).

I have seen the differences in writing between the two, but I am not sure if these turn into real world differences or not given it is an advanced toy.

I have no intention of using it in heavy wind etc and the comments above re 1080 and 4k are interesting. I have a large TV and do watch some 4k content, but even on a large screen 1080 is pretty good.

Any views?
 
I have flown RC Aircraft in all shapes and sizes for 20 years and have 6 DJI Drones including the Original Mini and now the Mini 2.

Simply put the Mini 2 is way ahead of the original mini. for a whole host of reasons. Main ones being the connection between the controller and the Drone (Ocusync 2 on the Mini 2) it is a rock solid connection both in video transmission and control signal. Second main point is the Mini 2's ability to handle the wind. In my view it will handle any wind you would sensibly fly it in.

Without doubt buy the Mini 2 rather than the Original mini. and buy the Fly more combo

On being able to fly it. Anyone can fly a DJI Drone. They are rock solid and totally stable..... The drones that people have difficulty with are the cheaper ones.

I am generally a cheap skate in what I buy but not drones....... In my view DJI is the only way to go
 
Yes, because I know I'll crash it, I've only ever flown the £20 - £80 ones - certainly with little or no auto-stabilising.

I figured I wasn't going to pay any proper money for one until I could fly the cheap ones, because I'd rather write off £80 than a thousand pounds (or even more).
 
What height was it flying at in your video? I’m thinking about 200’, but never having experience of a drone, that’s a pure guess.

I can understand your thinking but actually this is not the case. The DJI drones will hover and not drift or move if you dont touch the controller they have Multi Axis stabilization. GPS lock and heck knows what else.

If you have your first few flights on a DJI drone and wait till you have GPS lock (about 60 seconds) and it tells you this in an open area there is no way that you will crash it ever.

I thought that but, in fact, if you have a higher resolution camera, you can "crop" the video later.
There will always be a nice clip that would look better if it was cropped.
Having the extra resolution allows more flexibility later when you get it home.

I use KDEnLive editor - a free open source editor that runs on all PC platforms.
Over the last two or three years, KDEnLive had matured significantly.
One of its features is that you can set it to use "Proxy Clips".
This means that if your PC is old and too slow to manipulate 4K videos, KDEnLive will allow you to work with smaller sized video clips.
Then, when you are ready to render the final clip, it will go back to the original 4K video.
It also has excellent "key frame" features where you can select the video ate different times in the clip and perform various transitions between "key frames".
Excellent software - but, most importantly - its free.

When it comes to clever IT stuff and indeed open source or Raspberry Pi sort of things and indeed getting things like this to work wonders on a boat I will always bow to your superior skills and I am indeed aware that 4K gives much greater possibilities in post editing .

I tend to be a shoot the film.... Do a little bit with it and up load it sort of a guy. I have sometimes planned to make a lovely video but I actually know that it will take me the best part of 1-2 days and you guessed it I never get round to it.

If I tell you that with a 128 gb card in my drone It will only ever fill up in 1 - 2 years at 1080p but with 4k it is so different and when I see the file size I simply don't feel that most peoples eyes and equipment can as my mother would say 'feel the benefit'.

Earlier in the year I bought another TV (The 55 inch 4 K one) which is the largest of my collection of over 10 Tv's. I also got full fibre internet at monster speed (600 mb/s) so I naturally upgraded my Netflix to the 4K option.

I have had this setup now for several months and I watch quite a lot of netflix.................... I can honestly say that if I am getting 4k and I am sure I am I cant see the difference between that and the 1080p. This of course played right into the hands of here indoors cos she has always maintained that she cant see the difference between HD and SD. In fact I often catch her recording a channel in SD when it also has an HD option.... Go work that one out.

Either way this little Mini 2 is an absolute gem and if you or anyone has the cash and want to give this a go..... This is the one to get in my humble opinion.
 
I don't disagree with anything you are saying.
But treat yourself - have a go at KDEnLive.
Don't set out to do a big job with it.
For example
Just take your video that you posted here and cut it down to about a quarter of its size using KDEnLive
Simply snip bits out - add some fades between the clips and add audio - then render it.
Its easy.

The latest version of KDEnLive now splits your workflow into four sections - see at the top right of its screen
Logging
Editing
Audio
Effects
Colour

Click on Logging (Top Right) - add your clip/clips into the Top Left Window by Right Clicking
Click on Editing (Top Right) - Select Clip - then Middle window set "In Point" and "Out Point" - Drag Middle Window (selected part of the Clip) to the Time Line
Continue adding clips to the time line putting them on alternate tracks (V 1 - V2 - V1 - V2 etc) - Overlap the tracks slightly.
Click on Effects (Top Right) - Click Compositions in the middle of the screen and drag "Dissolve" to the overlap between clips on the time line.
Under the Project menu click Render - I usually select MP4 and then Render to File
Job done.

It doesn't need to be complicated.
The beauty of doing it this way is that you can do more complex stuff later if you want.
KDEnLive is as good as the expensive editors with all the features of professional editors.
And, as I say, all for free.

Just be aware that most of the "how to" videos on KDEnLive refer to the versions without this new workflow screen layout.
 
Sounds like a great bit of software, I come from a video editing background and don't disagree with you about 4k, I love that you can crop, zoom and pan when rendering in lower resolutions from it. It's just for 'everyday' saving 4x on storage is where I see the main benefit. I got bored of buying fast external drives and extra cloud space to store footage I don't use :)

Thanks for the vid , i quite fancy a drone but feel iwould vid the boat once then put it in the cupboard and not use again . So question do you use it much .
