Some brainless pillock has fitted the wrong gimbal housing on my boat!

As a follow up to my earlier thread http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234274 bemoaning my sudden water leak experience, I eventually accepted the inevitable, organised some heavy lifting gear and extracted Excalibur II's 5 litre petrol V8.

All was going as well as could be expected until yesterday when, having noted that the exhaust pipe only had three bolts holding it on to the gimbal housing at its base instead of the expected four, I had prepared myself to find either a broken fourth bolt or a stripped thread in the casting. I managed to gently undo two of the bolts and delicately sheared the head off the third, and then with a bit of a wriggle and judicious use of the trusty crowbar, off came the pipe.

To my horror, I found myself looking at a gimbal housing that was obviously never designed to accept a V8 style exhaust pipe. A quick look at the workshop manual revealed that the bolt pattern in front of me was intended to fit the exhaust pipe of a 4 cylinder in line engine. In all other respects, the two types of gimbal housing appear identical, so with the engine in the boat it is virtually impossible to detect that the gimbal housing is the wrong one. Until it starts to leak.

I am most uncomfortable with the prospect of just fitting new seals and putting this shambles back together as it was, given the obvious risk of catastrophic failure if the improperly bolted joint parts company. In displacement mode, the joint is well below the waterline with no access to it either inside or outside the boat, so there would be no way to stem the inrush of seawater into the boat.

It would appear that I have just had a very lucky ten years or so of (relatively) trouble-free boating. Clearly after this long I have no hope of redress via the previous owner, so I am now looking for an Alpha 1 generation 1 V8 style gimbal housing.

Anyone know where I might find one without spending a fortune?

Thanks for the responses, guys. I've used aquapart before and they seem very good (and quick) but don't list gimbal housings. Not come across mercstuff before though, so thanks for that JMcG. Not had much luck today, I will have to bash out some more emails tomorrow.

Unfortunately, as this pic shows, everything is attached to the gimbal housing, so it remains to be seen how much of my stuff I can get off my old one without breaking any more of it!

This is the problem I've got:

Probably worth a call to Coastal Rides to check whether they have a gimbal housing in their warehouse.

Thanks AdeOlly. Waiting to hear back as I write. I spoke to them and sent them details yesterday morning and I know they've got a very big warehouse so I hope they're still searching . . .

Keep 'em coming chaps - all suggestions gratefully received. :)

good point.. also, unless I'm looking at the wrong picture, the tapered hole isn't where it should be as denoted in this thread yet the Ebay chappy says it's come off a V8 and it's compatible with a whole bunch of engines.... a stab in the dark but maybe the one you have fitted wasn't fitted by said pillock, maybe it's fitted by design:eek:.. again, a stab in the dark based on nothing more than reading an Ebay post but may be worthwhile investigating as it could mean the difference between, say, a new seal and fit existing housing or buying the new / recon housing.

Thanks to all for the latest batch of replies.

Carlton - Trickett looked promising, but after a bit of delving they found their suppliers don't do the gimbal housing I need (they seem to deal mainly in aftermarket items). Said I would need to go to a Mercruiser dealer.

oGaryo - now that's an interesting one! I was tempted to open negotiations on that until I looked at the detailed photo of the exhaust flange. It's the same as mine!! OK, it might have "come off a V8" as they claim, but the bolt pattern is for an in-line 4 exhaust, and judging from the amount of gasket goo all over it (which shouldn't be necessary to seal the O-ring if it's properly bolted up) someone has done the same bodge as on mine.

Must admit the prospect of buying sight unseen via ebay from across the pond does worry me a bit!

The search continues . . .

have a look at that link again , the one you have is the middle picture , says its for a v8, and the bottom picture is the one your looking for.

oGayo - we crossed in the ether.

According to my workshop manual the one with the odd hole on the side is for 4 cylinder engines, the V6/V8 one is symmetrical with a pair of holes at the top.

I did note that one website (Mercstuff, I think) shows a five hole version, which appears to be suitable for either - presumably you use the four that line up and ignore the other one. Much more sensible from an engineering viewpoint as that avoids the temptation to bodge it. Either that, or you should design them to be completely different so the wrong ones just won't fit at all.

must admit that I'd feel the same buying blind never mind outside the UK, I looked on Ebay UK and found diddly... plenty on the state side Ebay sites if you search for Gimbal Housing Gen 1.

I have read that folk modify the housing to fit a Bravo leg by drilling additonal holes so maybe there's a known method for V8 exhaust to inline housing and as you say, someone else has done likewise on the fleabay job.

I'll keep my eye out for something a little closer to home.. never know, may get lucky and find something for you. I do hope you get this sorted with minimal fuss and expense, not nice being stitiched up by someone elses doing

Just a Thought

Its a stud that missing that holds it all together . Everything else is the same . You know where the stud should be as you have the other part .
Everything else is ok . No cracks and bearings Ok.

So

Paper over the bit with the hole marked in the correct position and get a stud welded into place . The worst that can happen in 10 yrs time is you have to weld another in .

Or

Get them to build it up for you and tap a hole .

Or

Weld a couple of nuts on .

Hope all works ok .

Any decent cast welder would do it . They use to repair castings
if they came out damaged from the foundary . Be considerably
cheaper as well .

Brilliant!!

Thanks Ian13, that sounds like a plan. I must admit, it never occurred to me to get my casting built up with weld and tap another hole.

Have a very good welder just down the road, so will explore that one tomorrow.

What a powerful place this forum is! :) :)

just a quick note.i have ordered many thing's for my mercruiser 5.7l v8 from the states and never had a problem yet. i.e dart cylinder heads.
eagle crank
flat top racing pistons ect ect.
i even got the water pump impellar for the alpha 1 leg ,with a brand new housing top and bottom around£50 cheaper then you could get in the u.k.
its just the exchange rate is'nt as good now and the import duty is abit of a kick in the nuts(but stll cheaper than the u.k)
just dont right the states off straight away.
