Inj anticipation of the bigger boat, I have been prototyping the stove from a small gas canister. Just big enough for a hotplate and a small back boiler.
I plan to suspend it from the deckhead rather than mount to a bulkhead or floor. (yes i WILL brace it too against a bulkead/hull) My idea is some cool tube and scroll work which could double as a drying area for small items also.

Still have glass to add, and vents etc, then cut off the old base, but you get the general idea. Next thing to ponder will be the flue, and exiting the coachroof with it. I am thinking of having the flue removeable, and the hole sealable with some kind of mushroom affair

SC, you are supposed to put a coffee mug next to it to judge scale ;o)

My first wood stove was also from a gas cylinder, not unlike yours. Had an S shaped gas path with a baffle in the upper part of the cylinder and an external box to increase the surface area and take the fumes to the back where the flue was.
It was so successful that I quickly had people knocking on the door with a gas cylinder and a desperate look in their eyes.
Not wishing to get into trouble with the gas cos. I redesigned it for sheet metal and built very many .

People often use pyrex bowls as 'glass'.

Yes we have built a load too! Got bored of it eventually, truth to tell I didnt quite enjoy it enough to carry on, and there are some very arty people out there doing much better things. Interesting about redesigning in sheet metal, we did that. We built a lot of workshop stoves and oil burrners.
Anyway, no coffee mugs to hand, so will this do?
By the way do you like the "G-Bolt" I thought it would be fun to have the locking bolt swinging about in a boat. The weight is provided by a bearing carrier.

the odd bit on the left is the "air breech" an air feed modelled on the workings of an old bolt action rifle. If it works I will make the handle a bit more elegant, it is basically a tube within a tube, the inner having a long slot cut into it to work as a variable choke. There is a bit ore to it than that but that is the principle. might be pants, I will find out tomorrow when I test run it. I just need to roll a flue and set fire to the puppy

Like the idea and delivery very much.

How about a small fiddle on the top surface to stop the mulled wine sliding off ?

And when you say "suspended", is it triangulated to resist the boat rolling from side to side ?

Double chimney wall to stop someone grabbing a hot stack by accident ? Also prevent carbon build up by condensation.

You need to be able to dry out your socks using it with all this winter sailing you are thinking about.

Mulled wine, you read my mind. There is going to be a couple of different fiddles (if the thing works as I want it to) to hold different things, all of which will mount to the outer bars.
The actual stove mounts will be solid and triangulated. Double chimney is an interesting idea.
We will only be using this at anchor or alongside, but it is still relevant.

Sandy, winter sailing has been a luxury with an actual yacht with a cabin, so yes being able to dry socks will make us truly in the upper echelon! Observe from the latest pic our sock rack is already welded on ;)

Looks good! Like the idea of a back boiler too. When you say "suspend it from the deckhead" I hope you are not going to mount it high. Obviously, the stove needs to be very close to floor level to avoid the lower half of your cabin staying cold.

As for the flue, i suggest you experiment with length on a windy day to ensure it is long enough to get it to draw and the stove to light without filling the cabin with smoke. It may need to be at least 4ft long.

Do please post a picture when you have it running ?

it will be low, but higher than you might expect. I will post pics when we have it going. Might install it on the smaller boat as my son has inherited it, even though we still sail it.

You may well want to line the bulkhead with a fireproof board, they can be very expensive, I would suggest Promat XS 9mm/12mm ? you will be able to source from Covers in Southampton. ( other merchants are available offering different products some at vastly more cost lol ) and a CO2 monitor should be on the to do list.

Looks good, be great to see a vid of her fired up

we have log burners at home, CO2 monitors always high on the list. Not sure about placement in the boat yet. This is a rough prototype that will probably end up in a shed at the boatyard, I will refine a design for the boat once it is here and I can properly work out where to put it. Then I will work out scorch proofing too as you suggest

Not to be too picky, but isn’t it a CO monitor youre wanting there?
