Solent to S Brittany, day sailing

Robin & others that know S Brittany,

The DS only has room for a small dinghy so it takes 3 trips for 6 people. Only got 2 weeks in total and 4 days will be there & back! Late July early August will we need to anchor off in S Brittany or will we get into marinas?

Would prefer to avoid buying a bigger inflatable as 3 man is all that fits in cockpit locker!

I will go Hamble - Guernsey then L'aber W'rach but may go straight through the Four to Cameret if I can time it right - any opinion?

Obviously all determined by weather as gentlemen (andmy boat) don't beat (very well!)

Thanks

With just two weeks I would definitely deliver the boat to somewhere like Falmouth to give you a head start.

You obviously need a quick trip down and again back if you are hoping to have some time down in the best spots. I still prefer the UK coast option via Dartmouth then Camaret on the way down and doing the L'Aberwrac'h Guernsey N. Brtittany route on the way back as the tides are better. We have always been a crew of just me and SWMBO, but with six crew I'd be tempted to do it direct in one hit, even doubling the Four and the Raz if conditions were good and you catch the tides right, but a short stop in one of the anchorages would get you back on track if you missed a gate. I would always favour getting as far down as you can as quickly as you can, that way allowing a leisurely cruise home.

The French holidays are from 14th July (Bastille Day) to 15th August (Assumption) in the main, stretched to the nearest weekend either end. It isn't usually a problem to find a visitor berth as the French all leave to move around the anchorages and other harbours, so it is a bit like musical chairs if you want marinas rather than to drop the hook. If the weather looks like going bad, get in before the mob though. Good plan if looking for a berth when it is busy is to arrive late morning when the locals are leaving as they generally aren't early risers!

A 3 man inflatable on a boat your size, jeez! However the French will paddle an Axe2 ashore with 6 up so... Neatest trick if your crew were willing was the Axe2 paddled ashore with 3 fellas and 3 girls, where the girls removed shorts and knickers so they wouldn't get them wet.:)

I think you will have a lot on your plate in two weeks, particularly if you have a crew in holiday mode.

If you need to be back by the final Sunday or Saturday to be on the safe side, then as soon as you reach, say, Benodet you might be thinking of heading north. No worries if you have a strong crew keen on sailing though.
You might prefer to advertise the Brest area as the destination and all else will be a bonus.
I would scronge a 2.7 tender with an inflatable floor and stick it deflated on the roof. You might not need it but if you do anchor, it will earn its keep.

Tempted to look for s/h. I have a Honda 2.3?HP outboard. When got boat I bought 4/5man inflatable at LIBS. Took delivery of boat and could not believe small opening of cockpit lockers. IIRC Mail speed were good and exchanged for smaller one (no transom board) FOC and we agreed other goods to make up value.

To the other poster - early delivery not an option as boat is otherwise out on charter. Realistically intend to take longer on return in case I need an early X channel due to weather. Boat has to be back for Cowes week!

See how work goes but if I can get more time off in 2012 will try for a longer period.

Thanks everyone for advice.

Having spent the best part of a week stuck in Falmouth several times waiting for the weather to be good enough to get SWMBO across to France, a delivery trip with pals and flight home is now the preferred option.

The big advantage is that your holiday then starts more relaxed and already at your favoured cruising ground. With a limited time on hols, there is less pressure to start to work your way north straight away. It also deceives SWMBO into thinking that she is getting a 'proper holiday' by going somewhere on a plane.

We have done a delivery trip Plymouth - Camaret (20 hours) - Belle Isle (20 hours) - Vannes (6 hours). Vannes is a secure place to leave your boat for a few weeks and not too expensive if before the end of June. Then trains to Rennes and flights to Southampton completes the circle.

I am a motor boater, But!

i would have thought:

Solent to Alderney or guernsey direct

Guernsey to Trebeurden, lovelly spot.

Treb to L'Aberwrach, lovelly spot.

L'Aberwarch to Camaret, lovelly spot.

The new Cherbourg marina in the naval/main port is ok

Camarret to Audierne, lovelly spot check draft and phone to check space first??

Or direct to Port de la foret , lovelly spot.

The next day a whole 3 miles to Concarneau , lovelly spot.

<< (leaving F when French school holidays start) >>

If you're worrying about crowding I wouldn't. It's not like the Med in summer.
