Although i love the solent the treck (4hrs there) from lincoln every other wkend is a real drag, especialy with black lab and 2 yr old oh not forgeting the MRS! who has a tendency to get p****ed so she cant drive.
I have been mulling over whether to try somewhere nearer maybe upto 2hrs traveling but I am struggling to get excited at the thought of Medway or maybe ipswich etc.... is there anyone out there that can recommend somewhere in either region? i'm of the power fraternity and am not looking to cruise to far afield (drunken mrs, kid and dog).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, it may even be cheaper than solent.

Hi I,m on the river ouse at York although not on the sea i can go for a jolly on the river any weather, plenty of places to moor and be able to get down the Humber to Hull or Grimsby or up the trent . Ok not as exciting as the sea but mooring costs at Naburn for a 30ft boat abount a grand, british waterways £300 and thats it .

Medway is much cheaper than the Solent! I'm in Chatham marina which is an MDL Marina. Not the cheapest but very good marina. River is ok, not as pretty as the upper Thames but at least there is no speed limit down stream past Hoo island. Its only about 3 hours to Ramsgate if you have a boat able to do 15 plus knots. You can be in the Solent in a long days cruise or you have the choice of the east coast or of course France, Belgium and Holland! If you just want a peaceful cruise with pubs or restaurants every couple of miles just pop up the Thames to the upper reaches!

If Chatham is full you could try Gillingham, or if you want a cheaper berth there is Hoo marina but it is tidal and rather muddy!

Best of luck

But surely he's still looking at a three-hour drive ?

As someone said on here previously, Skeggie would be an ideal location for a marina. Until then, you've a choice of long drive to good cruising grounds or short drive to cr@p cruising ground.

Hi

Lowestoft is now undergoing major regeneration. Associated British Ports have recently opened Haven Marina in Lowestoft and have 140 berths. The old docks are next on the plan and are likely to generate a further 100 berths. Although it does not yet offer hugely exciting cruising, with this development in additon to Ipswich and the Orwell, The River Deben, Southwold and the Norfolk Broads it is not all that bad!

The other thing is mooring in Haven Marina is about £140 per metre somewhat cheaper than south coast i am guessing!!

Happy to discuss if you want to PM me.

Marina at Hull. Not too far by road and depending on the speed of your boat lost of other places to visit. Also well placed for crossing the North Sea.

Or if you want real cheep with access to tidal out through the wash, if you dare, there are plenty of places near spalding where home owners have un-used moorings, also still in Lincolnshire, and all you need to do is strike a deal with one of them, I know of about thirty places where they have no boat, but I get laughed at for being tight fisted git /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Or,

How about Broads, close to sea exit at Gt. Yarmouth, lots to see & do if you have only a short time or the weather is against you and easy out to the salty stuff when you want. Plus plenty of pubs with outside parking for the Mrs.

Some super moorings in the E Coast rivers:
Burnham (R Crouch), R Stour and Orwell, R Blackwater, R Deben, The Walton Backwaters and then the Broads.
All have a variety of moorings, either swinging or marina, and some super cruising.
No experience of non tidal Medway but not impressed with Queenborough to Rochester other than as an over nighter on the way to somewhere (anywhere?!!) else.
Take a weekend in the car and visit the area.
